There’s another tool hire firm in Nottingham doing this. It won’t last. You can’t beat experience against an added service to a firms portfolio who know nothing about what they’re selling.

This is hard to explain mate. But under the head where the flat plate meets the side wall fibers attach there. only tiny ones that are really hard to see. They get trapped.

Have you bee printing banners mate? Sometimes the fibers from the edges can attach themselves to the heads giving this spray effect.

This is one way of looking at it. The powers that be keep telling us lower people we all live beyond our means. This is why we are in such a mess financially.
But here we have a government squandering billions into something that’s just for show yet taking more out of the tax payers pockets and giving the people who gave them power less for their money. I agree with the comment about Greece, where is this going to leave us? 😕

    James,
I disagree with you there mate. A good rep will know what they are talking about when it comes to vehicles, that’s their job. The rep I speak to and the matts I use advises very well and spends time on the phone to ensure they know i’ve taken on board every word they’ve said. If they do not know they should not be selling a box of materials with such a high value knowing full well this may not work then ignore the man when the job goes bang. He’s now a laughing stock and his reputation is on the line. If they don’t know what they are selling then let another one of there better trained staff sell it who does and save there clients embarrassment later.

I can remember when I first started doing graphic design when I was 15. No matter where you went for signage and the like the prices back then were high and most accepted this as it was classed then as a respectable profession.
Midland Spray and Signs who I first worked for charged good rates. Looking at todays prices and those of back then many are charging the same or less than in 1989. Now I see many signamakers treated badly and are forced to reduce their prices even lower. I was asked today how much I would charge per day just to fit vinyls. The max they wanted to pay was £50 per day. I declined gracefully. 😉

Seriously mate I’d go in at £650 for that. There’s far more work involved than you think. Your under pricing yourself and once you do that you’ll only ever go backwards. You’re not selling sticky back plastic, you’re providing a professional service with quality materials. 😉

    quote Martin:

Surprised you didn’t know about it before Karl, it’s not like it’s something new. Makes me laugh when people moan about the petrol companies raising the price of fuel & never mention the fact that the Government have been raking it in for years.

Unfortunately I don’t really have a choice, I either pay what they ask or confine myself to the flat. Without the car I simply can’t get out & about at all.

Every conversation I have with people regarding the cost of fuel, Whether I bring it up or they do Martin both those points are raised Martin.
And no mate, you don’t have a choice but if it went up to lets say £10 a gallon or more I’d suspect you’d have no choice but to stay in. No matter what income anyone has the fuel rises are hurting everyone.

Well at 10 million quid a day being given to Brussels you can see where it’s going. All these services being cut back all over the UK but more money in the government coffers. £140 a month council tax and now the bins only get emptied once a fortnight. 😕

Thanks for the replies guys. All the replies sound sensible and thanks for taking the time to reply.
Dave, there’s no pint really in attempting to get extra work from this one mate.
We can all dick about with customers on the promise of more work but some just aren’t worth the hassle. If he decides to have it done all well and good.
If he doesn’t….well he’s paid for something he’s not getting any pleasure from so like a few have said it’s his loss. Just got back in from doing a couple of vans so I’m happy. Now got a load of boards to lay up so gonna have a cig and a coffee and get cracking. 😉

Did the acrylic cool down to fast? I’ve seen people do this and the acrylic either catch fire or start to melt and they do the daft thing like chucking it in water causing it to crack.

    quote David Hammond:

Did the customer sign the quotation, agreeing to the quoted price, and that deposits are non refundable?

Either way you have provided your services to him, which are chargeable.

Yes David, the quote is written on his receipt and it states that deposits are not
refundable. All artworks have been OK’d via email.
My look on it is it’s his problem if he backs out. Non-refundable deposit paid in writing……work done.
I think I’ve covered myself. But it’s good to get others opinions on this issue
too. New laws come into force everyday that we’re not aware of.

Cheryl, I might be getting the wrong end of the stick with your reply, but I think your missing something here. This guy, even though I’ve done work, has said he’ll be looking for his deposit back if he goes elsewhere. I asked at the end of my first post if I was correct in my assumptions regarding the legality of the situation. My assumption is that I am. But I have read many posts on here regarding similar situations and thought at the time "Blimey, I never knew we couldn’t do that!" or "How can the law defend someone in that situation when it’s clear they are wrong?"
As for nothing to complain about I think I’ve been more than patient with the guy.

I agree Phill, and like you that’s why I do it.

Neil, it’s a totally different design from scratch. Problem is with some they seem to think you hold the deposit till they ask for it back whenever they change their minds or not.

Stiil waiting for him to reply to the last email. He decided at one point to carry on. I replied that’s great. If you could just email back confirmation that you want me to proceed, that the new design is that of which you require and are satisfied with the design and to finish off that you will pay the outstanding balance on completion I would be more than grateful for this.
    He has now stopped replying.

So until I get his confirmation email I’m not willing to carry on.
Bl00dy customers. They think when you bend over backwards for them that’s an invitation for a back alley dance! 😕

24" piece of diabond with a felt edge applied. Works wonders for app tape, laminating and flood coating. 😉

It’s not just ebay though. I drove past a place near Mansfield a while ago and they were advertising 10 x 2 banners for £35 inc. vat and artwork. These people
are putting businesses under. It’s ok saying don’t compete with ebay but perhaps soon we’ll have no choice. Just look at retail on the high street….many have gone because of internet deals.

People like that aren’t worth bothering with mate. if he’d have come here and said the same to me I’d have slapped him. There’s no need to talk to you like that.

    quote DavidRogers:

It’s not just ebay. There are loads of cowboys & businesses waiting to fail doing stupidly cheap prices just to get a job or even fairly big trade players topping up their work.

Prime example today. I get a call from an old client from when i worked at my last place (they wouldn’t give me a works mobile so all of the customers had my mobile number)…anyway… 2x1m full colour banner. I went in at a good price…I got a call back an hour later saying he’d called my old work too and they’ll do it for £25. That’s designed, printed & finished for £25…THAT’S just funny…that’s not even worth my design time…that’s just desperate.

Am I worried by this ‘theft’ or ‘devaluing’ of our business? Nope, my books are full and have been for well over a year. I don’t need to resort to being cheap to compete – having the balls to say “It’ll cost you this much” actually inspires confidence. eg. I do pop ups at £120 a pop and I tell people they can buy them on ebay if they want it cheaper…NOBODY does.

I’m not saying I’ll won’t do bargain bucket stuff now and again – but I’ll still make more than enough money to cover all costs & make a profit.

Tomorrow we are putting up a sign in the design area for customers to see.

“Nothing takes just 5 minutes” as we are all sick of hearing this every day from customers who want to interrupt other clients or get while-you-wait service.

Thought of also putting up as I saw it years ago:

    HIGH QUALITY
    FAST SPEED
    CHEAP PRICE

    Please pick two…

They all want high quality cheap price Dave. 😕
