Hand-Painted, Heart-Felt: Charlie Jeffery-King’s Creative Crusade Across the South

In a world saturated with digital prints and vinyl wraps, one artist is defiantly picking up her brushes and painting the town, quite literally.

Charlie Jeffery-King, 31, is the founder and creative force behind Artful Charlie, a business specialising in bespoke, hand-painted signage and murals across the South of England. From gilded shopfronts to illustrated windows, chalkboards, murals and even vehicles, Charlie’s mantra is simple: If she can paint it, she will.

“There’s a freedom in painting that you just don’t get from clicking ‘Print,” says Charlie. “Hand-painted signs carry a character and craftsmanship that vinyl simply can’t replicate. They last longer, feel more personal, and they adapt, something off-the-shelf signage struggles with.”

Her journey to signwriting wasn’t linear. With a foundation in design and marketing, Charlie eventually found herself helping out in her mother’s antique shop, an unexpected detour that rekindled her creative roots and introduced her to traditional sign painting. What began as a few signs soon blossomed into a full-time creative business.

Today, Artful Charlie is a familiar name to many independent businesses around Salisbury. If you’ve admired the windows of Dusty Apron, the frontage of the Coach and Horses, or the detailing at Ride Café, you’ve seen her work, though you may not have known it.

“I love Salisbury. It’s such a tight-knit place. I’ve been fortunate that most of my work comes from word-of-mouth or by simply walking into shops and starting a conversation. I’ve worked on Blueberry Den, Bell & Crown, and I even revived the signage for what used to be the Naked Bagel.”

Charlie’s work isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about connection. Every brushstroke is a collaboration, each piece a custom fit for the brand it represents.

Balancing brushes and baby bottles, Charlie’s also been navigating the complexities of motherhood alongside running a business. With a one-year-old in tow, she’s not just juggling, it’s a full-blown circus act. “He’s happy to come along on jobs. Sometimes, he’s part of the creative team,” she laughs.

One particularly eye-catching project sits proudly on Winchester Street: a shimmering gold leaf logo for Jimmy’s Barbershop, applied by hand with all the precision of a signwriting veteran. “I’d love to do more gold work, so if anyone’s after a bit of shine, I’m your gal.”

From May 30 to June 1, Charlie will showcase her work at the Vintage Nostalgia Festival, where she’ll also offer a discounted opportunity for a vintage vehicle to get a classic Artful Charlie makeover. Custom paint job, vintage flair, festival crowd? It sounds like a wrap, literally.
