Phill, I would agree with you that for someone starting out then a 610 wide plotter would be adequate especially if they didn’t know if it was going to be a hobby or a business. I would also agree that a wider plotter will take up more space but I am not so sure about the extra waste vinyl.
My graphtec will plot at just over a metre wide and on the odd occasion I have used it to plot at this width for certain jobs but generally I use 610 wide vinyl so there isn’t really any extra waste. If I were to replace my plotter I would probably look at another plotter that would plot this wide because I like to have the option but if I were starting out from scratch I would probably only buy a plotter wider than 610 if I had a specific need for it.
