what is the ruling with apostrophies?
-
I know this may sound a silly question but what is the ruling with apostrophies.
Should it be or Today`s or Todays or should it be Chefs or Chef`s.
I have a conflict of opinion here with the client.
Cheers

Why get into an argument with the client?, just ask him for the text.
-
Because the job is done and dusted and approved by a former employee. It now needs doing for another site but one member of staff has just come out with the comment to check the apostrophies. They are not saying where though. That is the reason I asked here.
There is no arguement here just a difference of opinion.
Anyone???
Cheers

Hi Gary!
Try asking here…

I personally think it should be Chef’s (as long as there is only one chef)and Today’s.

You can’t get any more concise than the description here. Pretty good site to visit to get English language problems answered.

Thanks for your help guys.
I am still unsure though. It is to be used in the Today`s Special and Chef`s Special context. Which I think is correct
I have so much going through my head it hurts and now this lol.
Will try and go through the links while I eat my dinner. Oh Joy!!
Thanks for your help.

Gary,
It IS
Today’s Special
Chef’s Special
I doesn’t make sense if you omit the apostrophe or if you place it elsewhere.
And don’t nobody give me the – ‘it could be lots of chefs that got together that day to come up with the one special dish that they would put on the menu that day’ – which would make it Chefs’ special. It wouldn’t happen, would it?
If anyone argues, give them my number. 😕

Gareth Lewis is right, or is it Gareth Lewi’s is right, or Gareth Lewis’ is right? 😀 I need to lie down! 😀

Trust me Gareth you don`t want it lol.
Right I`m gonna stamp for a bit.
Thanks once more for all your help.
Cheers

Wot kind of Restaurant is it?
If it’s posh then make sure you get the apostrophe’s right.
But if it’s a chain catering for the plebs – then who cares, the majority of the clientele probably can’t read anyway :peek:

Because it is our job to make sure the sign is correct.
Looks pretty bad when a signwriter makes a fubar.
In your case, the ‘ is correct.
I hate to see bad grammar on a sign. Here’s a blog making fun of extra quotation marks, those bug me too:

When I do a grammar check in Corel it says the apostrophy is wrong.
😕
-
Chef’s is correct – as 1 chef has concocted the special making it his creation therefore the apostrophe denotes possession. The same should be true of today as it’s giving possession to a particular time frame…….
The one I deal with is "Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess" as its an institute that belongs to a group containing many of the rank grades…….

Cheers guys.
I was right in the first place but couldn`t get the client to see it so we finally agreed on Daily Specials and Dish of the Day instead.
Thanks for all the help anyway.

Aha! My favourite type of solution, looking away from the problem, round the back of it and finding another method lurking there! Brilliant!
-
I kinda like "Dish of the Day"
It’s cute.

maybe if you used a ` instead of a ‘ on his sign it did look funny?
😀
