Smart Knife, Cutter Blades – what are the advantages?
-
Running a summa and a graphtec.
I recently heard about these smart knives which im sure your all aware of. Just wondering whats the real advantage apart from a little less intial setup. Is cutting improved? how long do they last?
Second question, ive always used non geniune blades in my graphtec, are official branded blades much improved/longer lasting.
Thanks

I got my little graphtec from Harry at Edward Mathias a while back. I’ve only ever had smart knives, and wouldn’t dream of using anything else. I’m on my second blade, first one ruined by silliness.
You’ll love Harry. -
I’ve used smart knives from Harry for years, wouldn’t go anywhere else. If you get to speak to Harry, & if he likes you, get comfortable & get a mug of tea. You’ll be on the phone for a while but you’ll learn a lot about your plotter & how to use it better. & hopefully you’re not easily offended by his sense of humour, the blokes a font of knowledge

+1 for smart knives and Harry. I love his humour.
Still use the normal blade for perf cutting as I can control the blade depth, rather than cranking pressure right up.

It is a number of years now since I used smart knives, so forgive me if things have changed.
Smart blades are great as they come in their sealed unit ready to cut. plug and play, so to speak.
From memory, there are cutting advantages in this system, which I don’t doubt are advantageous.
as has been said, Harry is a top bloke and probably has forgotten more than most will know about blades as well as many other aspects of cutters etc.I will add, I think Harry’s blades were better priced than my source also. which is another plus+!
my only gripe and it was more a personal preference, was having to “return” the spent blades in “the convenient return, jiffy bag” yep, there was even an easy way to return the spent knives.
what I found a couple of times was if we had an issue (operator’s fault) and a new blade was needed. the old hadn’t been returned yet or something or other and that then created a situation. for me, I preferred just to buy a 5 pack of blades. as they were going down in use, each time it was a reminder new had to be ordered for the member of staff. -
Started using Smart Knifes around 3+ years ago and in 35 years in the sign game I learned more for Harry about plotters in that time. Are they worth it Yes.
Graphtec and Mimaki
And most important if you need help with anything plotter related Harry is at the end of the phone to help at any time.

Not sure about the mug of tea Kev, maybe a flask and a packet of biscuits too! 🤣
Smart Blades for me also!

Used smart knives for past 15-20 years. simple and easy to swap over and yes mug of tea if you’re ordering as you may get sucked into the black hole of Harry

Ahhh yes but once you’ve ordered, you don’t need to ring just use the padded envelope and exchange them… he even reminds you on the envelope he’s not a mind reader and to tell him who you are! Makes me smile every time.
