both are used, often wrongly IMO, it’s only signwriting if you use a brush!

I always classed Sign Writers as people who do painted signs.

And I class what I do, as Sign Maker…. as I make signs?

I think Paul is on about the spelling, rather than what in refers to
sign-writer or sign writer is probably correct like you wouldn’t put enginedriver, motormechanic, or busconductor as one word.

Yes, I was referring to the correct spelling rather than meaning. So on that note, would it be Sign Writer or Sign writer?

    Hmmmmmmm lol

    I am a sign painter.
But I like to say sign writer because it sounds cooler.
If I did not paint, I would call myself a sign maker.

In oz its Sign Writer, but I’ve seen signwriter on some sign writer’s vans too…. nothing unusual for sign writers to have grammar issues though 😳

As for me, I’m a sign maker. I respect the traditional sign writers (painters) way to much to put myself in the same class as them.

Our Education department calls anyone that makes a living out of computer designing – web, print, signs etc – as Digital Artists.

My son starts Digital Art this term as he is now in year 9. His school has a Roland 540v…. He’ll be able to teach me a thing or too…. He’s a teenager, so he knows everything already (according to him 🙄 )

My son is year 8 and they have a plotter, some kind of fancy engraver and lots of fancy equipment, he hasn’t used them yet, but I am not looking forward to it, he already thinks he knows more than me!

BTW what do you call someone who ‘paints’ and ‘makes’ (a part from a fool!)

I always painted Signwriter on my vans and also printed the same on stationery. But it was only after I got a computer and spell check that I even noticed that apparently it’s wrong.

I use Signs & Art now as I think it covers a wider spectrum.

I do like the term signpainter and also use ‘Lettering’ a fair bit.

Don’t get me into the signwriter/signmaker argument, I got into trouble for that before!!!

all this begs the question signmaker, sign-maker or sign maker?

You cant call yourself a sign writer there’s a potential trade descriptions problem unless you do actually paint them surely?

i think we are ALL sign malers, those using a brush, can call themselves Sign writers too… or, artist, painter whatever… because the tradional method can be termed as all of the above. me, im a sign maker.

dont think the sites slogan would work just as well…
"created by Sign writers for Sign makers" 😕

Surely it is still writing whatever the media?

I would say I am writing this but I am actually typing, but this is a keyboard not a type writer, so I am key boarding! :nag4:

Sorry not one for the pc stuff!

I do think there should be a distinction between a highly skilled painter, and someone who can press a few buttons on a machine!

It has always been in times past signwriter

Microsoft or other spell checks have difficulty with some words if they are not in common usage in certain lands.
Spell checks swings into force to help correct what they see as a typing error but it does not mean there has been one

Is it songwriter or song writer?
I’ll think you’ll find it’s songwriter if you do a google

Well I always thought a job title was correct with capitals (ie Bus Conductor, Mechanical Engineer, etc).

Ah well, I suppose Sign Bloke will do!

mmmm you may be able to call a sign maker a sign writer but i bet a sign writer was never called a sign maker – this must be a new term coined for the modern sign person. I dont consider myself sign writer at all – and before any says – yeah nor do you customers – I mean I consider myself a signmaker – its all terminology i suppose at the end of the day! but i do consciously avoid the writer in any advertising etc.

I’m going to call them song makers from now on!
