Hi all I’ve been asked to make up some fluorescent yellow deep strips with red reflective chevrons to fit along the entire sides of a custom van. I told the customer i thought reflective red could only be used on the rear of vehicles but he is adamant he’s seen loads of vans with this combination along the sides. Its a wide load/escort vehicle so not sure if it is legal. Any pointers gratefully received jean

If you mean for lettering or general livery and not safety markings ensure you use a promotional grade reflective and not a high intensity reflective.

    Hi Jean

I read up on this recently for a similar job and I found the following.

The permitted colour depends on whether the material is mounted on the front, side or rear of a vehicle: Rear – only RED is allowed. (there are limited exceptions to this: e.g. yellow for number plates and “Long Vehicle” marker plates) Side – only AMBER (which is generally read as including yellow), with the exception that material within 1m of the rear of the vehicle is allowed to be RED. Front – any colour is permitted, EXCEPT red. (White is recommended). For the side of the vehicle only, there is a caveat to the above rule. If the side of the vehicle is fitted with retro-reflective material which is not for conspicuity purposes but is for advertising purposes, for example a company logo, there is a variation from the above rules in that any colour is permitted. However if the retro-reflective material is very high specification, even if it is in the shape of a logo it may still be deemed to be mounted on the vehicle for conspicuity purposes and then it will have to be amber. Shape and size There are no restrictions on shape or size.

    Hope that helps.

It does seem though. That you can’t use anything other than red on the back, even if it’s a low grade reflective. The caveat on that only seems to be for the side.

Thank you I’ve copied and pasted your replies in an email to my customer so hopefully he will believe me! His logo is vivid blue and black so might suggest reflective blue and either reflective white or fluorescent yellow to him. Hope everyone’s going to have a lovely long weekend even if here in Shropshire is forecast for rain all three days practically
