Dont want to put you off Lorraine as I believe different forms of advertising work in different areas. We tried telesales for a while and phoned a lot of companys. The initial response seemed good with some appointments made and some people requesting further info. Only one job came from the Appointments as most people were only curious as to what it would cost and we never really heard much from the people who requested extra info despite following them up. Having said all that these companys now have our literature so should they need a sign company hopefully they will contact us, at least we know the info went to the relevant person in the company rather than to "The Sign Buyer".
Gray does this guy want a wage or could you work out a commission only deal with him? That way it wont cost you any money if he doesnt make any sales. The downside is if he is very good it could cost you a fortune.
But them at least you would be making a lot more as well.
I hope the Telesales work for you Lorraine, it didnt for us but as I said before I think the area your in plays a part, Fife has a high level of unemployment and businesses dont have a lot of money to spend. If you are comparing the telesales to a mail shot were the same sort of businesses contacted? Also who was the mail shot addressed to? I ask because if the envelope was addressed to the buyer or the purchaser of signs I bet most of them never got opened. Now you have done the telesales you should have the names of the people responsible for signage in your database, I bet if you did another mailshot using these names you would get a better response. People tend to open mail when it is addressed to them but when its just addressed generally it goes straight in the bin.
I have found the very best way to apply marketing is by e-mail shots the concept is still new enough to make everybody check electronic mail you all do dont you on a regular basis what better way to reach the correct person we also keep messages only deleting once a week or month.
I am operating in the conference and exhibition industries and my market is somewhat smaller that the general sign industry i can be more selective as there exists a hyerarcial system of intermediate companies ie production companies who work for the end client. My services as a graphics contractor are commissioned by the production companies who handle all aspects the conference it’s a fascinating industry it’s given me a great living for 24 years. I hit 20 production companies recently with e mail shots i received 17 positive e mailed replies how good is that!!. I would be very interested to discuss all aspects of the internet and how it has impacted on our industry it would be great to have a Q AND A forum for all things IT. Perhaps we could all share our experiences in the IT field most of my artwork comes e- mail, ISDN or Broadband ADSL now- what would i do without it? I think we would all benefit from much more knowledge of IT and its potential for marketing. I use a fantastic guy who looks after my 8 apple macs he has written by website he is not expensive and my new site has worked if anyone has any thoughts on IT please POST REPLIES- EVEN THE DORMANT MEMBERSHIP! lets make Lorainne a very happy lady!
Hows about a helpline for IT hardware software and mac glitches?
