• Digitising of artwork

Posted by Andrew Blackett on July 23, 2002 at 1:31 pm

    hello all,

I would like to know what software and what methods you use to digitise your customers artwork. I saw the one that kevin did yesterday for oreo, but would like to know the easy ways of doing it.

    Someone able to help?

I scan the original at as low a dpi as I can get away with. If it is a very simple design then 72dpi. But never more than 300dpi. Colour if I need to separate the colours or b&w if the colours are easy to separate.

I then import the scan into illustrator, roatate the image to get it square and horizontal. After locking the scan I simply draw over the scan in a line colour which contrasts with the scanned image

Programs like streamline put in extra points and make a mess of most tight or round corners.

By the time I have removed and tidied up the extra points I could have drawn a new line or box, whatever, over the top just as quick.

Also, what is a big saving espically on text like E/F/T etc – just draw boxes and weld them together. This way you guarantee to keep stroke widths consistant. And it is very quick. Also using circles for the corners, keeps them consitant.

If the image is to big to scan then digital picture works just as well.
just reduce the IMAGE SIZE in Photoshop to A4 size and 72 dpi .

Unlock and delete the scan, “save as” from Illustrator as version 3 and the vector file will import into ANY program you can think of.
