    Hi folks. Im guessing i have been lucky in that i dont come across this problem but…..

    yesterday i was booked in at the local toyota dealer, they booked the date and time schedule weeks ago. Its a small job, so i turn up and see the mechanic working on the truck and get told to hang on for half an hour. After this time i then got told to come back in atleast an hour. Now i had no other jobs on that morning so its not like i can nip round they corner and do another job and this is 20mins from base. So i went had some lunch and waited. Now obviously they need to pay for this time but im guessing full hourly rate is a bit strong? i was thinking 60-70% waiting charge.

    Do you come across this? the job wasnt priced beforehand.

    Charge your normal hourly rate for the time wasted. They need to learn to respect that your time is just as important as theirs.

    if i am messed around for over 30+ minutes i will add an hourly rate. i tend to tolerate up to 30 minutes and then i lose it! 🤨🤣

    Personally, I’d be back in the van after 15 minutes & sent a bill for supply only, if they want me back to fit, they wait in line, could be weeks. The spanner monkey should have moved aside, he’s getting paid anyway so waiting for you shouldn’t have been an issue. As for the reduced hourly rate, not a chance, your costs don’t alter if you sit around doing nothing. I wouldn’t charge part hours either, you will set a precedent that you can be mugged off with no consequence. Maybe I’m just feeling a bit harsh, spent two days working on a shopping centre surrounded by members of the public who are as thick as pudding putting it very mildly.

    Kevin is bang on the money!

    We did an installation at a dealership, the vehicle was in the workshop.

    To be fair, the mechanic asked if there was anything else we could do on site, unfortunately not. He took us into the workshop, and we worked around each other. He even let us his platform to the cab top.

    Had we not been able to do it then, we’d have done the same and re-arranged at the next convenient time, which would have been into the following the week.

    The trouble can be, how signmakers quote for jobs.
    I.e.
    They give a price of say:
    £250+vat for a basic transit van, fitted.
    you then go to fit it and here is where the delays start and costs add up for us.

    If the quote was worded something like:
    £200+vat graphics only
    £50 per hour, installation
    Estimated installation time = 1 Hour
    Total: £250+vat

    at this, you are at least covering yourself for unforeseen issues.

    where it can get messy is, van dealerships generally tell the customer anything to get the sale. so…

    Mrs Smith:
    can my signmaker fit the graphics before it goes out?”

    Dealer:
    “Yes Mrs smith, no problem!”

    Alonge we come to do the install and the mechanic in the yard hasn’t spoken to the sales guy and the sales guys out for his lunch!
    In turn, we whack our customers for an extra hour wait.
    this is fair enough, but your customer has no knowledge of the situation created by the garage. But the inflated costs may cost them to end trading with you or just cause you grief in general. so its may be best to at least be clear with the customer, Martyn. Make them aware you will do the job as planned but this and that can happen so please make sure this is arranged as there will be costs incurred.

    its the same when it comes to cleaning the van prior to arrival. blah blah

      You always get the customer “£50 an hour!” like we’re all taking that home🙄

      yes spot on rob. i will state in the invoice the seperate added waiting charge. Luckily i did not give a price for the job beforehand. Whats most annoying with this is that i was booked in on this day between a time of 8am-13.00. That was my window to get this 45min job done. So i turn up at 9am. Reality is they knew they had 3hrs worth of work on the vehicle and should have told me between 11-13. Well im sure they will learn their lesson when they realise they have paid double for a job.

    we dont charge for this but i am going to speak with my boss tomorrow because this happened to me a few weeks ago. whats worse is, at the time i had my boss on the phone complaining that my hanging around waiting for a truck being brought inside a warehouse out of the rain was costing him money. i could see his point, but really, what can i do? to make matters worse we then had to dry down a bloody big lump of a truck before we could start. when we had asked for it to be inside the day before!
    i think this must be added to our quotes and clearly state that delays will be charged for after 10-15 minutes waiting time.

    charging for your time is a must. i have been stung by this several times over the years.
    that said, i do give them up to a max of 20 mins or so waiting, then i start to spit my dummy.
