  • Wrapping a shower tray?? Has anyone been asked or done this?

    Hi All,

I do enjoy the occasional unusual request to make life a bit more interesting & this is certainly up there!!

Customer has asked if I can wrap their shower tray (approx 1.6 x 0.9m) in matt black vinyl.

It’s quite a shallow tray with maybe 10-15mm lip so think it would be very possible to heat a wrap vinyl in.

Weak points I would think to be around the perimeter but wondering if a bead of clear silicone sort that? & the plug surround but he has said that could come out to wrap beneath before refitting it.

Otherwise my concerns would be the obvious hot water on it regards durability & secondly slip! But having said that I don’t imagine it would be any more slippy than the original smooth glossy surface & I had thought it may be possible to add a layer of an antislip floor laminate to the bottom flat section potentially either as a solid piece or maybe make a feature of it by cutting it into circles or stripes.

I’d be interested in anyone’s views, ideas or comments on this & certainly if anyone has done it successfully before.

    Thanks

Hi myles, yes ive done this job years ago in my old cottage because the tray had split. My tray had raised knobbles all over it so cant say much about the slippyness but its an easy enough job to do, i only used a polymeric if i remember correct.

Hi Martyn, Did you seal around the edges or anything extra like that or was it ok just trimmed to the grout line? & did you have to heat it to conform or did you cut the corners as it was polymeric?

No mine was a deep tray and i just covered the lowest part not up the sides. But yes in this case i would seal around the edges. Mine was just a blag/quick fix because the shower tray had the tiling straight on top so it would mean renovating the whole shower to remove the tray. It did its job for 5 yrs then the new owner renovated.

I’ve never done a shower tray but have got umpteen bath panels behind me. Always a yellowish white & always got loads of mastic on them. A metre of matt black wrap is going to cost around £25-30? I wouldn’t settle for less than that if I was doing it Myles, hot water & detergent is never going to extend the life of the vinyl whatever you use but you don’t really want to be called back to somebody’s shower cubicle to replace it if it fails.

I doubt the usefulness of the anti slip lam to be honest unless they shower with their shoes on. Wouldn’t think a bead of sealant would do any harm though

Hi Kevin, yes I’m a big fan of doing a job once only!! & would rather spend the little extra first time than have the hassle & embarrassment of a callback.

Luckily I know this customer quite well too so can ensure they know the potential issues & think I could even get them to do the silicone bit themselves or chance it without if they’re happy to.

They wouldn’t be the type to take me to court if it failed after a few months either so it would almost be a good test piece.

Don’t know about that mate, if it goes well you could get asked to do more. Got a few punters that have asked me to wrap everything but their sandwiches

          Ha Ha, indeed.

It still amazes me how many people think you can “wrap or just put a sticker over it” on a rusty old bus or van to make it suddenly perfect!!🤣

Could be worse, just had a guy in wanting enough white vinyl to cover both sides of his 4m x2m luton. DIY job, ‘if it’s going to be any more than £30 I won’t waste your time’

    But you already did
