Where to hire a designer?
Posted by Warren Beard on October 3, 2012 at 8:05 pmI’m looking to take on a junior designer but have no idea where to start looking for one, anybody hired one before and know where I should be looking or should I just put adds in the local papers?
Cheers

The job centre should be a safe bet.
Where we are there is no cost.
I`d ask for email a few examples from their portfolio, I think this will weed out the bad ones.
We have in the past put adverts in local shops by colleges, when we wanted a part timer, though what hours suited them didn`t suit us, though we did find a few good people.

If you do find someone I would make up a sample client and ask them to design logo, van, shop signs for them as some designers view things in a different world when it comes to signs etc

What about local colleges Warren, most of them run design courses some students keep in touch after leaving so might be worth a try.

I agree with Martin & Lee, try your local college if you’ve got one but give them a typical sample client or job. Ours is always looking for work experience for the students.
I’ve employed 2 good guys using that route (and weeded out 3 that weren’t suitable) but what they learn in college doesn’t always translate to the ‘real’ world of signs.

Thanks guys and girls, will try those avenues.
cheers
