what make / brand is a Signcraft vinyl cutter?
Posted by Sarah-jayne on August 10, 2011 at 11:47 pmHi – I’ve used a craft robo for hobby work in the past and I’m looking at starting a sign business as a way to help to support my kids. I spoke to a guy selling a “turnkey” sign making business – but he said the plotter cutter was a 24 inch signcraft. I cannot find this on google, anyone any ideas as to what the cutter is and whether it is worth getting? I’m on a seriously tight budget and his appeals as there’s software, clipart, discs, vinyl and tools all included.
I’ve just ordered 2 books from Amazon – one was the art of eye appeal and the other a “how to start a sign business” which I hope will set me on the right road.
Many thanks in advance.

Sorry mate but there’s no such thing as a "turnkey" Sign business.
Unless you’re buying an established shop with qualified tradespeople working in the business already. -
I would be careful about buying any sort of instant sort of set up, OK so you want to earn money to support the family but do you really need to rush in to anything?
Take your time and learn a bit before you splash out on equipment, joining the forum is a good step in the right direction as you will learn a lot from here if you want to.Trouble with buying packages is that they always seem to be over priced and contain stuff you don’t really need or will never use. Believe me I learnt the hard way.
Start by downloading the toolbar if you haven’t already, look through the suppliers and give a few of them a call so you can get a better idea about prices.

thanks! I’ve committed to doing a couple of craft industry events in Oct and Nov – I have a lot of craft stuff to sell, it was how I earned a living before I had kids – so hoping to recoup most of the outlay on the cutter then plus having vinyls, t shirt transfers, novelty plaques, printed bags etc if I can get that far by then! Next off to the printing forum for daft question 37 …

Sarah, be careful if this is for sale on adverts.ie or donedeal.ie I have heard a few stories about the Instant Sign businesses for sale there.
PM me the ad if you want me to have a look.
If you are used to a CraftRobo you might be disappointed with a cheap s/h chinese cutter. -

here’s the done deal link www. donedeal.ie or I was seriously thinking about this one

First one, I wouldn’t touch that with a 40 ft pole. Most definitely either dodgy software or Corel 5 or 6. The other discs are bootleg. You would get a really good second hand cutter if you look around for that money.
The Pcut is what I started out with……it’s ok, tempermental to set up, no backup AT ALL and just not efficient (wasted vinyl, mine did sporadic mad unexplained stuff etc etc)
Yes it will get you started but if you get any way busy you will be tearing your hair out. You know the Graphtec system with the Robo, if I was you I’d be looking for a second hand Graphtec cutter.
The difference is really astronomical. Hit cut…..job done, no grey hairs 🙂 -
Like Harry has said I wouldn’t touch the first one, plotter is probably a pcut or other chinese cutter anyway so basically the same plotter as your second link.
Most of the software listed looks to be cheap ebay copies and most of it is probably of little use to you.
Doesn’t actually say what you get in the way of vinyl so could be a couple of metres of a colour you will never use. Suppliers lists and contacts, well you can get them here for free on the toolbar.Second link, lots of talk about chinese plotters, there is absolutely no support from manufacturers so you do need to know a little to set them up right. Have a look through the plotter forum which will give you some sort of idea.

Thanks for all the eplies. I have received invaluable advice and an extemely kind offer of help – so I am steering clear of these chinese cutters, curbing my enthusiasm – starting small and can hopefully make enough to invest in a graphtec in a couple of months time. I’m going to do my reading, search the forums, make an ideas book and start at the beginning!

The second book you have bought is probably Phill Fentons one of the guys on the forum. Not seen it myself but have read on the boards that it has helped people that have bought it start up.
Probably best not to get to carried away buying equipment until you have read at least some of the book as it will help you to avoid some of the mistakes people make starting out.
