What do you use for this finish?
Hi guys
I have been asked to produce a sign similar to this one, as in wooden with stand off lettering. I am having trouble finding an external architrave similar in size to this one. My searches come up with internal ones mainly even though I type external.
I know that I need to use marine ply for the panels but not sure about the architrave material.Any advice would be great,

How close to that moulding does it have to be? signgeer do a plastic framing along the same lines as that & I would guess others do as well. if it needs to be wood then any timber merchant will have a range of framing with different profiles which may be close. If it needs to match exactly then find someone locally with a CNC router as they will be able to produce an exact match. It’s easy enough to produce custom mouldings with a CNC router 😆

I looked at Signgeer but I need to paint it. I will pop along to my local timber merchants tomorrow and have a look.

I would still try and keep with modern day products, even though a traditional look.
Backing board could be composite.
The architrave could be PVC door moulding.
Flat cut letters in composite, acrylic etc.This will give exactly the same effect but last much longer!
Google "image" search for PVC door Moulding and the like and you will find lots.
Careful not to get the hollow moulding as you will find it difficult to glue or fix to the face of the composite.your only drawback is. "if like the picture" you have to match the door and window framing colour to the fascia sign. you are then reverting to a paint which will have to be able to adhere to pvc and composite. if not, you can get PVC aerosols etc these type of things are better bought from local auto spray supplies as they will colour match a proper sized can for around £10.

My client is insisting on a wooden sign and has given me a sample pot of the paint colour he wants used. I could try and match it but as it a mixed colour not an off the shelf one I am not sure. Also as I outsource my printing at the moment getting sample prints can take time and cost.
The text is only going to be black vinyl anyway the photo was more for the architrave not the lettering.
I will just have to make sure that the vinyl will take to the paint. -

try googling "image" hardwood door moulding. Even dado rail… all looks very similar.
treat it front and back and paint as instructed.it is all very well a customer wanting this and that, samples etc but you must make money at the end of the day.
so as long as you have this ordered confirmed and covering your time on these samples etc then give him what he wants.as long as the finish is smooth and in a gloss or satin finish, the vinyl will take to it. once applied, apply some gradual heat to the letters to help promote a faster, better bond.

I am just concerned about the external weathering but as you say all I can do is treat it properly and give them what they want. I am sure it will all be okay I have just not worked with wood before. Sounds silly but always have fitted to Ali/ acm panels. The client has removed any trace of the old sign so I have a blank canvas as such.
