  • weeding vinyl in the cold?

    Morning folks

i am wrapped up in extra layers and my small workshop is bearable to work in, all things considered. but the vinyl is not. it is a pig to weed and the paper liner is often wavy and not easy to apply application tape to. do you have any tips on what to do or is it a case of “i need central heating” 😰😣

    thanks

    It’s terrible isn’t it!

I had a whole load of vans in last week to have additional numbers on, the vinyl was so brittle when weeding, I ended up putting a small fan heater behind the cutter to warm the media up, it worked well.

Thanks david. i brought a small blow heater into work today to give it a go.
the temperature outside is warmer now, so i hope that helps with the vinyl. 🙂

You all need some heating. don’t be so tight 🙂

But seriously i cant imagine working in the workshop below 17c. Its gonna affect your vinyl etc. I know we dont like putting the heating on but its definitely gonna make your day more enjoyable.

there isn’t any central heating in my unit, just a couple of small electric heaters. they are normally ok, but not in this ice cold weather. 🙄

I used to keep my workshop at around 16-18° degrees all year round with just a couple of oil rads and a small fan, which would cost around £100 a month, then I took on the neighbouring unit which was as well insulated as a pole-barn, it doubled my space and, coinciding with the energy cost rises, I ended up with £600 a month bills… bloody near killed me and from then I just couldn’t afford to heat such a large space.

However, I did use temp heating by way of a small fan heater under the glass bench when required, and an infra-red heater (patio thing) over the other, which did help and was only used as required.

      thanks Hugh

yes the costs are no fun at all, even though i only have a small workspace to heat.

i have a small electric heater right below my desk and i have an electric heated mat on the floor right below my feet which is great. but standing at the workbench weeding brittle vinyl is not fun. 😰

There is nothing worse than working with vinyl in the cold.
If you think the room is holding some level of heat, but the vinyl is brittle. Look at where you are storing our vinyl.
    I.e.
    * On its side, standing on the cold floor. (even on a roll-end protector)
Definite no-no, on a cold stone floor it not only makes the vinyl cold mainly at one side. The material can absorb moisture in the freezing temperatures.

    * On a wall rack, but against a cold metal or brick wall?
If you have correx, take the vinyl off the rack and put correx at the rear and then the vinyl back on the rack. it helps keep the cold off the vinyl.

    * Are you weeding on a metal, worktop?
Put a sheet of correx of foamboard on the worktop.

    * Keep your vinyl delivery in their boxes until you need to use it.

When you close at night, do not turn the heaters off. Leave them on, and turn them down slightly if running cost is a concern. But do not turn them completely off. The slight heat in the room helps lower the chance of the vinyl becoming brittle

    thanks for the tips robert

all of my vinyl stands up on its end and the floor is stone in that area. 🙄

i now have a small blow fan that is helping heat the room better but the vinyl weeding is pretty much the same.
