I think we’re really underselling the van signs we’ve installed. I tend to just ‘guess’ a price, but after considering the time involved to design, produce and install some of them, let along material costs, I think we’re underpricing… when I work out a price to accommodate the time spent, it sounds scarily expensive.

Take a look at some of the pictures below, I’ll add a comment as to what we would charged for the job (excl VAT), and I’d appreciate any feedback on what you think.

We tend to use Metamark M7, and MD5 vinyl, or equivalents, so no cheap and chips monomeric vinyl.

Hard to price others work without the artwork to hand, I’ve just messaged you via face ache some of my recent work with prices written on.

If you want to email me a couple of random eps files I’ll try and give you an idea based on your artwork, I can’t really price your design time but the rest should be easy enough to price.

Thanks Iain & Hugh for your help. It is much appreciated and I owe you a few beers.

We’re changing how we price vans up, and putting together a guide like Iain has.

I’m feeling much more positive (even excited) about the coming financial year

Yes hopefully catch up with you both at Sign & Digital.

Iain, do you send those guides by email, and include a brief explination as to what affects the price, like materials etc?

They are quite a big file with all the artwork etc but yes I send them via WeTransfer. Lots of things can affect the pricing, biggest one being the customer.
Once you price your vinyl, then it’s totally down to the individual how they price their time. I like to think £30-£35 per hour is s reasonable charge, and don’t forget to add the set up and artwork charges. I have a brief sheet somewhere with all this on I think [emoji106]

    Massive thank’s guys!

Price guide is coming along nicely.

Had a customer enquire about having their van signed up, 2 colour vinyl, with a full colour print in two spots.

My head price was saying £250, showed the other half the design and asked what she’d pay, she said £200 (knowing nothing about pricing). Using your advice, put a price in at £425+VAT… I’ve never been so nervous when the customer replied to the quote. half expecting to get told to sod off. They’ve accepted and it’s booked in for tomorrow.

Thinking about it, say they keep the van for 4 years, it’s just over £100 a year in advertising, so good value.

I’m also much happier knowing we’re making a decent profit from it.

Get your backsides down to S&D, and I’ll get you a few beers

Good stuff David, glad to know it’s working!! It does surprise me sometimes that people don’t baulk at some of my prices but, they are what they are! It’s the ones who whine about it when I’ve knowingly gone in a bit cheap for a mate / ‘hanger on’ that really get me!

I’ll see you at sign uk on the wednesday mate. bringing Matt, another local sign maker and signboard member who I’ve worked with for years!

    No worries David.
If it’s putting more pennies in the piggy bank then it’s no bad thing.

Hi Iain, l know its been a while since this thread was on here, but l have only just read it, and l was wondering if it would be possible to let me have your pricing guide, l have, and still am using the “Price it” sign pricing guide, 2013-2014 edition, l did contact them to ask for any updates and they said they have not revised it as of yet! and like David Hammond, people keep saying l am to cheap. Any advice you could give me would be invaluable

      Thanks in advance

      Nigel

It’s a kick in the bollocks isn’t it.

I still struggle, but having had lots of conversations, and advice from members here, we’re tweaking our sales process.

    1) Find out their budget. If they’ve got £100 to spend, you can either give them £100 of stickers, or walk away.

    2) Get artwork paid in full first. Don’t be doing prospective design work, then hit them with "that’ll cost £600" (see point 1) if they can’t afford it, you’re suddenly ‘expensive’ and they’ll go touting your design around elsewhere.

Take your photo, you know they were quoted £700 for it. Use it as an example, "something like this will cost £xxx" or "for your budget you can have something like this"

Try and reverse engineer how they worked out £700.

How many meters of material? What was the cost?
How much time did you spend on it? design & installation?

We charge per meter of material, or Sq/M of digital print. + Design + Installation.

Cheers for the advice David,Just when i think i have it figured out. And thats another area people dont like to pay…the mock up designs.Sometimes i do wonder i’ve chosen the right business to get in to :smiles: I think i, like yourself, am going to start charging by the sqm or sqft. Its very difficult to know what to charge and get consistent work in this area and i don’t want to be a busy fool. Good job ive kept my HGV licence 🙁

Just today I had an enquiry in from a new customer.

He sent over an unimpressive design, he’d had done elsewhere, for ‘free’, but now can’t get hold of the company who did it.

Deposit paid, and I’m now working on a greatly improved design!

Some wont pay for it, there are plenty who will
