Urgent – clear face visor film required to assist in the current crisis
Posted by Phill Fenton on April 8, 2020 at 3:30 pmWe have been making face shields to give away to care workers as there is a desperate shortage just now. Between yesterday and today we have made up 45 so far. These are made from aluminium composite to form the frames with clear acrylic, acetate or PVC attached top the front to form the visor. Unfortunately we are quickly running out of the clear material (A4 size).
Does anyone have of know of a source for this type of material. Regular suppliers are already sold out so I have been going onto amazon to try and source A4 sheets but deliveries are a couple of weeks away.
Willing to pay but donations would be gratefully accepted

Hi Phil
Could you use 175 micron security film if so I have a full roll 1200mm x 30lmStef
-
Probably could Stef if it’s reasonably clear and not too flimsy

Hi Phil
In the daily star there is an article about a husband and wife making masks similar to yours using window filmShall I post a sample
Stef

That would be brilliant Stef. Whereabout in the country are you?

Phil
In the West Midlands
Forward you’re address and I will post tomorrowStef

Hi Phil
As you’d expect the world has gone crazy for both Clear PETG and PVC. I think anything below 240 / 220 micron would be a bit flimsy and 220 micron would be a push, you could try one of our branches as I’m away from the business until we get the all clear

Ive tried laminating clear laminate film glues sided to glue side and while quite flimsy it would be useable were it not for the fact the clarity wasn’t too great. So even 175 micron film would be doable providing it was clear enough
-
Hi Phil
The film is optically clear and scratch resistant however the backing liner is not
Stef

The backing liner would be removed so that shouldn’t be an issue

I will send the sample out tomorrow, if the film is suitable you can have it Foc

I’ve just placed an order for 1500 x A4 240 Micron clear sheets with http://handypacks.eu.If you have a laser cutter check out this video which has links to .dxf files to cut the headbands.
I’ve produced 100 today and will distribute when additional PVC sheets get delivered..

That’s excellent Paul – and looks to be far superior to what I have been producing. The head band is fully conformable and should be much more comfortable than the headband I have been producing. I don’t have a laser cut so can’t adapt my method unfortunately.

Now obviously this is not going to stand the test of time, nor is it optically clear. But it’s great seeing how innovative we all are creating things like this, even though I have seen a list of crazy ones doing the rounds on social media. 😆
This was posted on Facebook also… -
Just a quick update on this – last week we made over 100 visors to give away to care workers in our area and we have a backlog of people and organisations asking for more. Stef very kindly sent me samples which turned out to be ideal and he has offered to send me what he was FOC which should be good for producing another 500 or so.

Absolutely fantastic work and selfless help and effort by Phill & Alison at The Right Signs, Livingston in Scotland.
It is really great to see UKSB members collaborating together at such an important time like this. So thank you also to Stefan Byrne at Window Films and Graphics, Tipton, West Midlands, England for your help and very generous donation to Phill at the Right Signs.Great stuff guys! :claps:
