John, have a look back through the flexi posts as Brian Little asked a similar question recently I got a good answer from John Harding I believe.

Hi
There is a tool in the ‘lens’ palette but think this is only available in the high end versions of the software, you select the object and specify the percentage of transparency. Works on any object whether bitmap or vector BUT when you export it wants to rasterise it first and if it is a large object it creates massive file sizes, or you have to select a really low resolution and the result is poor. Not the best tool.
Another option is the make transparent colour in the bitmap toolbar – once again think this is only in high end version. It’s a photoshop style magic brush tool to select only contiguous slabs of colour and then you make that specific colour transparent. Not a great tool again though as the edge selection is basic with little control – ok for mock ups but not production – same comment for both tools really.
We would use photoshop for any transparency then take it back into flexi
Hope that helps
Cheers

Johnmagic wand click on background area dotted lines appear round object and edge (adjust tolerance if necessary)
from the bitmap dropdown select invert selection
then again from the bitmap option convert marquee to shape
select both objects then from the arrange dropdown select mask
hey presto -
