  • Switching website service provider

I have used the same company to both register domain names and to provide website hosting now for more than 10 years. However, I have finally had enough of their sharp practices and would like to move my website to another provider. How do I go about this? My domain name registration was through this company and is automatically renewed every two years. I want to ensure that I do not "lose" any of the domain names I have registered, and wish to seamlessly transfer my website to another hosting company.

Any advice? Recommendations? Problems to watch out for?

Most providers give you a control panel from which you manage your account. You should be able to request a transfer from this control panel, if not send them an email requesting the domain names to be released. Your new service provider will then be able to take control of the domains. I have had to do this for a few clients and it should be a very straight forward procedure but some companies make it as hard as possible. I use 34sp.com they are really good at support and the prices are quite good too.

    best of luck

    Hi Phil..

I have used http://www.1and1.co.uk for my domains as they have always been the cheapest around. For my hosting I have used http://www.GoDaddy.com for years now with all sorts of websites I have done … they have been fantastic. Really good hosting prices and excellent customer services by email and phone… really great service and their reps know what they are talking about!!

They can advise how to change over to them. Give them a buz from their website details.

I have also registered some of my domains through them at times when they run special offers.

Hope this helps – Regards Gavin

You can change the tag to another provider. They should do it free, at least through a control panel if you have one. If a fee is involved check that Nominet’s fee isn’t cheaper (15.00 ish) You can look up your .co.uk status by going to http://www.nic.uk and putting your domain name in the whois box. If you do change the tag make sure that the dns is changed too or it will still point to the old servers, once everything has changed the old host will have no control over name or site so make sure you have your site ready to upload to the new host.

Not sure about moving it but you can point it to another host, I use 3ix and they are good.

    cheers

I can definitely second the "1and1" recommendation. Simple to transfer and child’s play to manage email and sub domains. When you transfer you will start a fresh billing cycle for your domains.

As for service provider, they are not the cheapest, but BT do have the best QoS of any provider, well worth paying the little extra for quality when so much depends on it.

    I’m also with 1and1 – can’t fault them.

Host 26 business domains (7 sites) and also have them for personal use too.

Dead easy to administer, auto billing…

    Dave

Only had 5 or 6 hours downtime in as many years and that’s when they had a fire in a server room…back up and running – no loss of anything.

For domain transfers – can be a little tricky if the present host plays at silly buggers….but very often goes smoothly.

me too, about 6 or 7 sites and domains, and can only confirm the uptime!

I’ve transfered a couple of sites Phil, as has already been mentioned its a doddle as long as the current host plays ball.

if your host Does not play ball. then have a word with nominet. http://www.nominet.org.uk/ they will sort it. I had a site registered with an American company who tried to charge me an exorbitant annual fee for renewing registration.

I use Blacknight.com and find them great. they have all the bits you would expect and more, good value to. I was with a different company up untill about 2 years ago and changed as Black night were about 50% cheaper with more extras.
