    Hi All

We had some stainless steel letters made back in February by a reputable trade sign supplier.

The letters are made from 304 grade S/S with 0.9mm thick faces.

My initial thoughts are that the flux has not been cleaned off properly post soldering??

Has anyone come across this kind of thing before?

The sign is fitted to a wall inside the building so weather conditions are not a factor.

My customer has not cleaned the letters since they were installed with any type of cleaning solution through fear of damage to the faces.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it definitely stainless? Difficult to see properly from the photo but it looks like anodised aluminium.

I don’t think it’s 304 grade SS. It may be 403. Genuine 304 SS would never get oxidised or rusted except in some certain conditions. We do SS letters all the time, 99% for outdoor and we only use 304. We never had such issues.

Some companies use 403 instead of 304 when it’s for indoor just because it’s slightly cheaper. But if the amount of moisture is high in the room then 403 ss will start having such issues.

Having said that, I’m not saying that it’s definitely 403 but it’s likely.
