    Hi All,

Has anyone had any experience of printing onto optically clear vinyl with Latex printer to replicate stained glass?

If so, any tips/tricks to get the best results?

Which media best to use for longevity? i.e. PVC/Non PVC

How long would you expect it to last in a window situation fitted internally onto new double glazed windows.

Are there any potential hazards re glass heating & cracking (I know this can happen with certain glass when using privacy films)

I have a customer asking if it would be possible to replicate old stained glass church windows being removed & replaced with double glazed units. They don’t want the cost of new actual stained glass & are investigating alternatives.

    Hi Myles

    Quick reply for now…

    • What sizes are the windows they want the stained glass on?
    • Do you have any pictures of the existing ones that they want copied?
    • Have the double-glassed units/windows already been made and installed?
    • How many windows does he want done?

      Hi Rob,

There are 9 windows in total

      6 at 6ft x 2ft

      2 at 10ft x 2ft

      1 at 10ft x 6ft

No, new units not manufactured yet. I think it’s all just in the planning & costing stage at the moment.

We did test optical clear with producing the ‘stained glass window effect’, but found for this job, colours weak, so we used Metamark window frost to produce a similar effect.

All printed on HP latex system with a matt lam for increased protection. Edges as always have 5mm trim graphic-to-frame gap. Fitted externally.

      Hi Colin,

Yes I’ve actually done a small frosted effect print to look like stained glass applied inside. This may even be an option for them & will be offered.

I also did another using optically clear Aslan DFP18 with a reduced saturation so it looked faded (this was what they specified)

I installed some Metamark frosting today that was printed on my 335.

I used a backlit profile, and 20pass, but the colours didn’t look noticeably different. You may be able to increase the ink limits on the printer, and add a interpass delay to allow time for it cure.
