Someone needs to invent a vinyl that can be any colour you want it to be. i.e. it would come in white but then you would do something to it such as apply an electrical current and the vinyl would change to any colour of your choosing. This way you wouldn’t need to keep a large stock of colours and could match any artwork no matter how difficult the colour. Plus you would never run out of a specific colour halfway through a job. The benefits to Sign makers are beyond measure.

There you go , Oracal, Avery, 3M, Graffityp et al – you can have my idea for free (puppy-eyes)

Now your onto something Mr fenton!

    Hmmm you have me thinking now… what about… wait… what about…. 😕

What about we stock white and then using some sort of Ink surface covering device to change the colour by clicking some sort of colour pallet?
Combined, i recon we are onto a winner here…

Exactly… I was thinking maybe some way of changing the colour from white to anything else might be the stumbling block to my idea that’s why I was thinking some kind of electrical contraption would need to be invented to do it. But some sort of ink coating device might work 😕

what if you had for instance some sort of white media that you could feed into an ink filled contraption (need a name for it) and when it came out the other end it was whatever colour you wanted. You could even reduce the different colours of ink you need by allowing say for instance 5 basic colours to mix to make other colours?? Onto something here

An Inker, we’ll call it an Inker

    I’m thinking Phill, I’m thinking…

    quote Ewan Chrystal:

An Inker, we’ll call it an Inker

Ewan, I am sure Fiat has already invented the "Fiat Inca".
nice try… back to the drawing board mate. :shake:

No you’re wrong Rob – it was a Seat Inca not a Fiat..

Ewan’s onto something here I think

Fair play to him, I clearly got my Fiat & Seat mixed up…
So now we are settled on a name, I think this is what one of these Inker things might look like, what do you think… will it ever take off or we better just stocking up on plenty coloured rolls of vinyl. :shake:

Tell you what would really rock the boat, what if we could get one of these Inkers to ink and cut the vinyl?

So joking aside – have we reached the stage yet were we can dispense with the need for coloured vinyl?

Is a print and cut latex machine an acceptable replacement for cut vinyl?

You may argue that running costs are higher due to the need to print the colour – but offset against this is the increased efficiency being able to combine multiple colours of lettering in one operation resulting in less waste vinyl. Two or three colour layouts featuring drop shadows and outlines would be achieved in a single operation resulting in less material usage and less fitting time.

The only downside I can think of is durability – are latex printer approaching the same sort of durability as coloured vinyl without the need to laminate?

something along these lines would be cool

Dependant on the profiles use, media etc latex is of similar durability of solvent unilluminated.
best durability un-laminated, is sticking a lighbar onto your old printer and costs a fraction of the price.

you are more than welcome to pop into my place if you want to see ours running phill, we also have 2 latex machines, so you can compare yourself.

I still remember the early sales pitch for digital printers, "no need to stock coloured vinyl, just white" I even remember someone on here who was told to sell his plotter because the print and cut machine could be used for all his cutting.
