  • Software for Summa Barcodes?

Hi, I own a roland BN-20 and a Summa cutter. I’m looking to add Summa Barcodes into my workflow but I’m struggling to find a decent software.

I have tried easysign which added the barcodes but didn’t create the reg marks correctly and so the cutter read the barcode and file but not the reg marks.

I have also tried Onyx postershop but I can’t really use it as it doesn’t support my printer.

Are there any other softwares out there that I can try? I just need to be able to import a design, add the barcode and regmarks then I can export to versaworks to print and summa cutserver to cut.

    Thanks,
    Robin

    Hi,

What are you trying to achieve?
Send a job to the printer, a barcode gets printed, a cut file is generated, put the print in the cutter, scan barcode, load cut file and cut?

I have seen a Summa demo and Onyx Thrive doing this but not sure BN-20 is supported by these applications. I remember the barcode was HUGE, wouldn’t fit your printer, not sure if it scales down with the width of the job. You should get a grown up printer.

Can you not get around with registration marks as opposed to barcode? It’s using less material. The barcode is good if you do long runs like a full roll of mixed up jobs but I doubt you do that with BN-20.

    Have you asked Summa?

I don’t think a printer you have is worth the whole investment into what you want to achieve.

I use Summa F series with Roland printers with barcodes

When summa f was purchased needed to upgrade to Onyx Thrive nearly £4 K
Then needed to purchase a key code for GoProduce for Summa F to read the barcode nearly £2 k

So all considering that you have a correct machine to read these barcodes which I would really think you do not considering using hobby printer BN its does not end on just being capable of printing a barcode.

You need to have correct summa cutter with the opos camera to be able to read a summa barcode and cut the file.

    My workflow is as follow.

Print on Roland with Onyx Thrive with all the cut lines generated for the F series.

Onyx recognises the cut lines and creates a cut file and sends it through a cut server where the GoProduce is installed.

Set the Opos camera on the first barcode and let the system to the rest of kiss cutting and through cutting or whatever the job is being worked.

From the sound I would just continue using versaworks and although is slower to print reg marks and takes longer to read them but to set up what you need would take £££ and whats it worth for BN does not seem worth the investment.
