Posted by Marc Jones on February 24, 2011 at 6:19 pm

Hello can anyone help me out with setting this up for print and cut.

Am i to use the serial lead or the parallel lead?
Do I have to set it up being a printer and a seperate setup for cutter
    or do I choose hybrid?

And is there any software by roland that needs to be installed on pc as i cannot get the printer to work at all although i know it works as i have seen it working and printing prior to purchasing.

    Thankyou in advance

did you get the dongle when you bought the machine?
I am presuming flexi was part of the deal?

    Hello,

yes I have a dongle – and the program works fine for cutting i managed to sort that part of it out now. Its just the printing side of things. I have just found a driver for windows XP would this make a difference as I have not installed any drivers for the printer yet?

It’s a very old printer and if you bought it just to save on weeding then you will find yourself quite expensive compared to people offering cut vinyl.

Your best bet would be to contact Scanvec who produce Flexisign as I am sure they will have come across this problem many times.

If you introduce yourself in the hello forum you will also find more people willing to help.

from what I can remember you need to have the drivers installed for this printer in whatever operating system your using xp i think is one of the best and last supported by Roland the flexi driver is just that a flexi driver for the management editing panel.
I also if i can remember! you need to rig the printer up via a Ethernet cable adapter via your parallel port as this stops the printer from going into standby while its printing

Thankyou very much, I will look into this, im starting to think of a newer printer, would you say there is more support for the PC 60 still?

There is very little if any support for any of these printers so my advice would be not to buy one unless you have a need for it. By that I mean something that can’t be done with a solvent or eco solvent printer. There are members of the forum that run eco solvent printers that have kept their old thermal printers because they are useful for the odd job here and there where special colours are required but that’s all the use they get.
From what I have read they are more expensive to run so you are as well just buying in printed graphics from a trade supplier until your requirement for them has grown to a level where it would be better to buy your own machine.

If you think about it if they were such a good buy then everyone would still want them and the prices would still be high for them.

Ok I see what your saying, eco solvent is the way to go, can anyone recommend a solvent printer which can contour cut as a startup printer.

    thankyou!

Hi The guys on here will try to advise you the best they can! Perhaps a little background information would help, ie your setup at the moment! how long you’ve done this!
If your new to this business! Then please say so as some of the tech speak can be a little daunting, (some members will assume that your already at a certain level)

This business if you can make a business out of it! Is baby steps,
Run to far beyond your experience and you will definitely get burned!

If your trying to do print and cut without even knowing how to weed simple cut vinyl properly then your hitting several problems straight away! (Just an example)

It may look like theirs loads of money to be made at this Game! but to be honest, Their really isn’t that much profit if your going to get the reputation of doing a good job then decent quality materials and your time factor into this,
to be honest if this is your first dabble into the vinyl business, Then a must have is a vinyl cutter, Not print! Not print and cut! Just vinyl, Printers are fine for art work! and graphics, But what if you get a job and the customer wants a bright single colour Orange,or Black, or Green(try printing Orange on your current printer) unless you have one of the more professional printers! Printing any color is extremely expensive to print and the final outcome can leave lot to be desired, when you only need a single color, Better to just cut it out of standard vinyl,

Look on flea-bay for just how cheap and nasty some of the quality and vinyl is, For most people this is usually good enough But not if you want to get a reputation for Excellent quality and workmanship!
Martin made a comment about buying in what you need to begin with! An excellent Idea!

Anyway I’m going to stop now as this comment started out as a what he said!

    My background.

i am into vinyl cutting anyway and have been for a couple of years, i do graphic design and i also already have established a printing business for pictures, photos, canvases.

What it is i have had alot of enquirys for printed vinyl and just went down a cheap option for now to dip my toe in the water but it appears I did not research this very well and was told that pc60 cartridges would fit the pc50 but obviously they dont. and Pc60 cartridges seem to be easy to get hold of and refills.

    Sooo

    My setup at the moment is;

HP T610 Pigment dye 44" printer
Roland PC-50 Vinyl Cutter and printer
    USCUTTER 24" Vinyl Cutter
    Flexisign 7.6 at the moment

I have been cutting my vinyl designs now for a while and designing loads too. But I had a couple of designs which were quite intense weeding and for a sticker I sold for £3 it took 20mins+ to weed so the idea was to just print the sticker onto clear vinyl and contour cut it out.

I could use flexisign on the Pigment Dye printer and print to pigment dye vinyl but I have only seen white vinyl for that, and then im unsure how to contour cut it after.
