I’ve routed out some foamex letters for a sign and from experience of doing similar ones you need to seal the edge or the paint will get sucked into the material.
In the past I’ve used sanding filler primer and it works very well but is expensive, this job is quite a bit of smaller lettering so I’d waste more in over spray than I’d get on the letters and then it needs sanding back to a good finish.

Is there an alternative? I don’t need the finish this time so after sealing the edges I’ll just prime and gloss them with car body paint.
