Screen Printing virgin, any advice please?
Posted by Tony Walton on April 5, 2007 at 7:44 pmHi all. After 8 years in the Sign Business Ive just purchased my very first screen printing kit and Multi heat press. Ive always farmed out this type of work. Just wondering if any of you experts with a little experience may have some advice for me on types of emulsion, inks, and any tips on suppliers that may be of some use for me. I know by experience that its much easier to take advice from people who "seen it all before" than to make the mistakes yourself. Thanks to any advice, no matter what. cheers

Hi Tony,
I don’t know about spain but in UK I use Sericol for all my inks, Colenso for emulsion and other consumables. If you going to do a lot of T’shirts you’ll need a conveyer dryer rather than a heat press.Cheers John

Well thank you very much John. Ive got the sericol trade price list just need to find the colenso now. Thanks again. Cheers Tony

Hi Tony,
Sericol emulsion is good aswell, I just prefer the Fotecoat 1072 supplied by colenso. The 1072 caters for any kind of printing including plastisols. Fine lines can be a bit iffy but apart from that its an all rounda.Cheers John

Screen printing is only easy if you have someone to train you. If you are starting from scratch on your own you are gonna struggle to get it right. I have been training my lad to screenprint for the last 4 years and still can’t turn my back for too long. Yes he can print ok but if there is a problem he can only print his way out of trouble rather than pinning down the cause of the trouble and correcting it, that does take knowledge of the craft.

Hi All,
I agree with Mike that it is a craft and can’t be learned overnight. I’ve been screen printing since leaving school and trained a few apprentices, some didn’t take to it, others have went on to operate machines and equipment I’ve never used. I thought after serving my time I knew everything but I learned more in the next few years by working with other printers and am still learning now after 24 years in the business.Hope everybodies advice doesn’t put you off and if you can’t get the hang of it, try it while being topped up with wine. It won’t make you any better, at printing, but you won’t be worried about ink all over the walls and the wasted miss prints.
