  • re setting laptop to factory settings help

Posted by Neil Speirs on April 18, 2010 at 10:21 am

Looking for some techie help here please.

My 10 year old daughters laptop is running like a bag of nails, I’ve tried un-installing loads of programs, defrags & even a system restore way back to last year but it’s still running so sloooooowwwwwwwwwwww 😕

Is there anyway to reset the laptop/operating system back to it’s original factory settings without the need to format the hd & re-install windows?

    Any help appreciated

neil did you try installing malearebytes Anti malware

    http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-A … 04572.html

i had a pc with the same problems, found about 40 different wee buggers that the antivirus missed.
    up to speed now

Also install avast onto it , seem to be the best at the moment

sorry ian, malware anti slows the pc down considerably and you should never install 2 programs.

when u finished with the programs, dump them off for a bit of speed.

i use http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html for most of my cleanups… but to go to factory will be a case of googling the model number and following the instructions (unless you remember formatting the machine which may have removed the hidden partition)

If its a Windows 7 laptop press f8 on boot up and you can reinstall the software off the hidden partition. also try preessing the space bar on boot up if the option is not shown after f8 is pressed.

    quote Dave Rowland:

Have to disagree on this occasion Dave, i’m not a complete techie, but having used it now for a few months, what had turned into complete go slows are back to normal speed.
I know it might not be the best there is to buy but Neil has stated it his daughters computer, so most likley used on Bebo, facebook etc, catching all the common day viruses and Malwares.
this will cure these. might not be recommended for a multinational server based system, but i’d say Neil will get good results.

well ian, if u remove the software u gain a few % in speed.. trust me… program is crap

i had bought 5 licenses last year for a number of machines after a school techie had installed it all over the network, but after complaints i had to remove it as it was slowing down the computers, only a few weeks ago i removed it from the accounts computer as that was just slooow, it did make some difference.

Any virus/malware checker will add a small amount of delay to harddisk writing and reading as it scans the files for infections, as most PC’s use temporary files it can slow it up a fair bit. Another checker by the name of "Eset" claim theirs is the quickest recently when I was at a pro-gaming exhibition where they exhibited but I believe in installing something, do the job and then get it off!

The best solution to speed up a computer is to reinstall windows but thats not always easy,

I have used malbytes but like Dave I uninstall after it has scanned, I also use revo unistall a free uninstaller. Beats windows uninstall hands down, Windows leaves quite a bit behind. If the os is messed up inside a bit no amount of tuning or scanning will get it running right.
