We are due to do some vinyl wrapping of wall panels in a shop inside a shopping centre. My Public liability insurance is for £2,000,000 but the centre management are insisting we need £6,000,000 before they will allow us access!

What do they think I’m going to do – run amok with a bulldozer?

    Polite rant over :awkward:

I had this working in a local marina on a yacht, I had to sign in, PAY for a permit to work within the marina, then prove PL, luckily I’d recently renewed it so had an email to hand, I don’t recall if at the time I had £2m cover but they wanted £6m, I phoned my broker and got £5m cover for about another £30, which I added to the job, along with the cost of the permit, to extend it to £6m would’ve meant £10m cover and a couple of hundred extra… after a bit of haggling they said that £5m would be acceptable and let me in.. I made them ok it in writing on a notepad!

My insurer wants £144 to increase the cover. So I have asked my client if I can add this to my fee or could they negotiate an acceptance of the lower cover we currently hold as I am not prepared to absorb this additional costing myself. Even if I did run amok with a bulldozer I think I would struggle to get above 2 million worth of damage before the security guards managed to overwhelm me..

It’s because you’re working in an area with such a high number of people passing through. One wee slip up could easily result in a huge personal injury claim. A sad result of the world we live in is the rampant claim culture.

This was resolved by my insistance that additional costs incurred to increase my liability insurance would be added to the bill. The client then relented and negotiated the lower figure of 2 Million as acceptable with the centre so the job is going ahead as planned.

Meanwhile I had an enquiry to supply some stickers to a plant hire company who asked if they could open a credit account to order these stickers. I agreed to this and was sent a PQQ to fill in (24 pages) before they could set me up on their system. In amongst all the bullshit was a requirement for £5,000,000 public liability insurance? What are they on? Do they think my stickers are going to self combust?

    really I despair

Next they’ll be sending PQQ’s to the local supermarket to fill in before they agree to buy milk and coffee off them for the staff room.

Some companies are just up themselves.. I blame the parents :awkward:

We do quite a lot of shopping centre installs and they want £10m cover. Just wait til you get an airport install they require £50m if you go airside!!

We have €6.5 cover had to raise it to €15 to do work for a recently built(2008) theatre. They pay the extra €1000 every for the extra cover.

€6.5 covers us in Dublin Airport
