  • Problems with subing out vinyl work to cut

    Hi all.

Looking for some direction on this situation as my first instincts are normally wrong.

So i have a job which i had to sub out as i dont have a plotter large enough. Simple large logo split into 2 for a van. I supplied the artwork which i provided 2 weeks ago and told them im fitting monday 24th.

I chased them last week expecting a tracking number and had usual bs that its being sent out tomorrow ……… Anyway monday 24th midday we have phoned and they have it packaged awaiting delivery. So obviously told them wtf, we are fitting it today and you have had 2 weeks……………………."dont worry we will send it fast track you will have it today". Tues 25th 7am still nothing.

Now im actually fitting it tomorrow morning, but allowed for some bs time. Im assuming it will arrive this morning.

Now my question is what to do about this sign companies bill? As far as im concerned its piss poor service which i should not pay for.
Do i tell them to poke the invoice where the sun dont shine? Reduce the bill for it being late? Or just pay and swollow it.

Option c will put me in an early grave.

Tricky one. If you don’t miss the deadline & the job goes as planned, I would take it on the chin & pay the bill but find a supplier that doesn’t leave it so close to the wire. If on the other hand you don’t receive your order will you actually lose the job or just reschedule? That will give you the option to twist the knife & get a better price on it if it has actually been dispatched. If you miss the deadline & lose the job, I would cancel the order, I wouldn’t even pay for the return. Tell them you no longer need it & send a courier at their cost to collect. Is it a company based in Finland?

Thanks kevin, yes its a company 1 hour up the road. Things like this make you realise how well we run our firms

Im not sure if i would lose the job but i would lose my reputation and any further work with my customer.

Well its at the courier depo in my town now. Going to collect soon so looks like the job is saved. Still unacceptable service tho. I think im going to send them a polite email and reduce the invoice.

If you haven’t lost anything & all goes as planned I think you will struggle to justify reducing the payment Martyn. No, it isn’t right that you were kept waiting for your order, but nobody died & the job will go off without a hitch. I would look around for a new supplier but unless you’re going to buy a bigger plotter anytime soon, you may need this outfit on your side at some point in the future. Setting yourself up for an argument, possibly in a courtroom isn’t worth your time mate, just my opinion.

If you stiff them a penny on their invoice they will remember it forever, I know I would. Next request for a job goes in the bin, at least it would if it was me. Catch more flies with honey than vinegar if you get my drift

Yes i get what your saying. Tbh i will never use them again, 1st job working together, was hoping to build a reliable relationship with a job which is as simple as they come. Obviously not.

Plenty more firms in the sea

Well there’s your problem right there mate, if you’re using firms that are in the sea, their delivery times are going to be shocking.
    There I go again…[emoji17]

Did your supplier come through for you in the end Martyn?

The job turned up yes but believe it or not the quality is pretty poor. Unbelievable how a large "professional" outfit can have trouble cutting stripping and taping some vinyl. :shake:

One of the large pieces has numerous creases under the app tape and dirt and stones stuck under the vinyl.
Im fitting it today, im hoping i can fix it whilst fitting.

Have yet to contact them. I think it will be my first job tomorrow morning.

On the very rare occasions that I’ve supplied another signwriter, nothing less than perfection would do just as a professional pride. Guess you’ll be on the hunt for a bigger plotter soon then?

Thats what you would expect. Getting a bigger plotter has been on my mind for a while but the truth is i rarely need it, this has been the first job in over a year. I manage with my 610 most the time. Main reason for looking into a 1220 was for print and cut.

Any the nightmare is over, i did the job yesterday. Sometimes i think i could do with more hands. Maybe its something i can talk to the doctor about.

Staff are an expensive luxury Martyn. Wrapping magnets don’t ask for time off or pay rises.

You should be in Stand-up Kevin, not signage [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

I’ve been told I should be on the stage Iain, think they said something about sweeping it
