  • Problem cutting 18′ Decals with accuracy

Posted by Sean Prokopec on April 17, 2017 at 5:26 pm

    Hi,

I currently have a job cutting out 18′ long black decals and I am unable to do it with any level of accuracy.

The lines drift off very quickly and I’m not sure what I can do to improve the quality or if this machine is even capable of doing this kind of job.

If anyone has any input into the matter I would be very grateful.

    Thanks,

    Sean

What type and brand of machine is it?
Have you much experience in loading this type of machine?
    Is the machine New?

    It’s a Roland SP-540V.

Have been using this machine for a few months now for printing and cutting labels and decals for the boats the company I currently work at.

We purchased this machine used from someone who had been making vinyl designs.

The main problem seems to be when the media is fed it will not stay perpendicular to the machine.

I tried adding more pinch rollers but I didn’t make any difference.

The decal I am trying to print is about 2" wide and about 18′ long. It makes the first cut from one end completely to the other and by the time it reaches the end the edge of the media has shifted at least 1/2".

Are you making sure that the two extreme end pinch roller wheels are holding the media?
the pinch rollers in-between can be used too, but keep up if contour cutting a print.

use a good cleaner and make sure each of the rubber wheels are very clean. they can get greasy from vinyls and inks over time.

make sure the knurled steel roller the pinch wheels are clamping too are clean and free from trapped paper debris.
these are easy cleaned by a stiff tooth brush or the like.

when loading the media, make sure its gently pulled taught and completely flat before dripping the pinch rollers.

Your machine will track this distance no problem. I am guessing its something silly, "for now".

We have had this on the forum quite a few times with the SP540V.
It often turns out to be a cracked roller mount.
