I am having trouble with getting a crisp print. I had an engineer in, he did all the alignments, checks, etc. Before he left (almost 3 hours later) he managed to get a good print. I hoped it was fixed but the problem has not gone away. On the invoice he said he increased the voltage to the motors and this seem to fix the problem.

I call and sent more pictures of the problem to the engineer who in turn sent the info to the head office of Mimaki. The response I received was

I’ve talked to Mimaki and sent your pics for viewing by them.

    Although doing the alignments for your former problem was the correct procedure;

after they examined the pics, they feel that in their experience of your current issue that replacing the print head seemed to solve the problem

Has anyone else had this issue? Any other thoughts on what this might be. The wording they have given to me for the solution doesn’t sound to me like they are 100% confident that this will fix the issue. I starting using generic inks about 6 months ago, could this be the problem?

Can be a variety of things.

Misaligned heads, poor calibration for bi-directional or static scatter to name a few.

Static issues if low humidity or you’ve changed media type…try on different media.
    Head too high…reduce height.
Try same print but unidirectional only.

See if any of these make a difference (one at a time)

After that it’s run the calibration.

Changing the heads seems a bit extreme / pointless until all other things are tried…at no cost.

Thanks for the input. I will continue to do some testing before replacing the print head.

I’d go with electrical fault on the cyan channel of the head. What model of Mimaki are you running? Try running in a different mode to see if that help. For example, if you’re running 720×1080, try running 540×1080 or 720×1440. Electrical faults sometimes show themselves in one mode but not another. If the calibration is out then it’s normally uniformly out. That seems to be an erratic overspray pattern.

Thanks I will try that next. I am using a cjv30-130. The company I am working with thinks replacing the head will fix it. (Although the wording they used leads me to believe that this is just a guess on their part) When the technician was here doing his tests he managed to get one really crisp print. On the invoice he states that he increased the drive voltage and that fixed the problem but I still have the problem.

I just did some testing in different print modes and it seems to work just fine when using a higher dpi or more passes. I think the electrical thing would seem to be the right call. Thanks for the input

Although I have gotten past this issue, (I now can get a crisp image) Thank you Stafford Cox! I am quite sure I now have a software issue. I am using RasterLinkPro5SG. I had a new computer put in since my install 3.5 years ago, so I reinstalled the software but never had an issue until this problem showed itself. (Looks like the resolution had never been changing for me)

When I pick the resolution in the software it doesn’t seem to get sent to the printer correctly. The screen/panel on the printer is flashing a different resolution. Sometimes I can get it to change with the right combination of turning the printer off and on/ turning the software off and on. Maybe if I reinstall the software? Any tips on doing it a bit differently? What to watch for?

You can eliminate a software fault by using a different RIP. There’s a free 14 day trial of Shiraz available at http://www.shiraz-software.com. Beware though, you won’t want to use Rasterlink again afterwards 😀
