Printing on Clear
Posted by stikrz on January 30, 2003 at 1:28 pmHi all!
I’m trying to print on clear with an eps image and the colors are not opaque enough! What is the recommend method of doing this or can it be done? I read a post about printing white, resetting and printing the color on top. Is that the best or only way? Or does it work better just printing vector images? I could use some tricks!
Thanks,

i quick and easy way to do this is print the image as you would normaly on the clear vinyl, in reverse though.
then take wihite vinyl and apply ontop of the clear vinyl.. make a small one up first and have a look at the result. its just the same if im following your question properly.1. print graphic sample
2. apply white vinyl ontop of print
3. lift them from release and look at the result on the sticky end..hope this helps 😉
p.s. if this is only short run then its effective. but printing white and with lots of small stickers.. im unsure, i normaly just do as above.

Thanks Robert,
It is only one graphic! The way it’s designed, I have to have some elements “floating” over the substrate. It’s a graphic for a Harley tank and some elements are feathers sort of flying out of the eagles head, so the feathers are “above” the tank. Hard to explain, but I need the tank to show through and need the white under just the elements. Can’t have any white vinyl anywhere other than the graphic elements. I’ll try what you said and thanks for the help! Anymore ideas?

THAT BEING THE CASE MATE I DONT THINK ITS GONNA WORK…
ILL POST LATER AND SEE IF I CAN HAVE A THINK ON THAT ONE.. 🙄

Why is it not possibel to just print on clear? I didn’t know you couldn’t until I tried it. Which really S***s since it cuts out half my applications!
Any other ideas!

If you are printing in full colour (four colour process) this is an Additive Colour system (i.e. you add colour to white to achieve the result).
So, printing onto clear vinyl will work only if the sticker is then applied to a white background, else you will get undesirable results. If you are using an Edge to produce the prints, I suggest to print a primer coat of white to the shape and then print the four colour process on top. This way you will get the correct results when applying onto a different colour background.
The other way round it (judging by the picture you uploaded) is to print the design on white and contour cut it, either by hand or on a cutter.
Hope this is of help.

The best way is to print this – I use this for inside car stickers – is to print your image onto clear in reverse, do your contour cut then remove them from your printer and then cover the whole thing in an opaque screen print. this gives you the feasability to remove the stickers with your contour cut…
Hope this helps 😕

Print the graphics, take them out of the machine and do not weed them. Cover them in screen printing ink – normal ink – then you can weed them no probs!! Saves time and money!!

gav, do you get finished results as if you are printing on white vinyl? or are they still a little bit pale.
Phil, when i have screen printed on to cut shapes, i have left the weeding till i have printed, and it has dryed alittle, the ink air drys in approx 10mins. it`s better to weed after u have printed, in case of smudging/the ink falling off the edge of the graphic etc, causing a nasty mess. thats if you want the ink to go right up to the edge.
lovely stuff ink…. 😀

Useful advice Gavin. I always wondered how to print an image visible from the sticky side of vinyl – now I know. Where do you get your white screenprinting ink from ?

Hi Phil,
It was something I did with the guy round the corner as an experiment.. He does it when I need it done for about a tenner (usually FOC..) I can ask him where he buys his inks from…

Thanks guys for the ideas! I’ll see what happens. Sounds like I’ll have to print on white and hand cut it. What a drag!
Have fun!

u can get the ink from sericol, ployplas if my merory serves me right. about £25 a ltr. depending upon colour.

Thats right although for certain colours you could pay upto £50 a litre, try this place Sign Trade Supplies on 01634 81571, they sell it in 500gm and 250gm pots as well.

Chuck, how are you printing your stickers???
I am guessing as you mentioned cutting them out by hand that you are using some sort of printer, laser, alps or similar, rather than an edge or a colour cam.
