  • Painting Exterior Wooden Signs – advice needed, please?

Posted by Warren Beard on February 27, 2015 at 10:20 pm

    Hi All

Does anybody make exterior wooden signs that are painted? I’m trying to get some advise on best paints and methods to paint and stain wooden signs, maybe even wooden A-Boards.

Not sure if brush/roller is fine or if best to spray them? Any advise or tips would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Warren

I use oil based paint on wooden signs ive done Use a primer then undercoat and sand when dry Then topcoat You can use brush or roller Takes a lot of time to do Pay attention to the edges (I normally run some sand paper down edges just to take the sharpness off I always frame the signs on 3 edges only Leaving the bottom free so water runs of If water gets into the edge The sign will fail quicker Signs done this way can last many many years Its all in the prep 😀
Oil base always seems more hard wearing than other paints

Everything that Tim has said, I’ve tried acrylic based paints and they do not appear to be as durable and it’s very difficult to achieve a good smooth gloss finish. If it’s a panel then Finnish Birch Ply has always been my preference, ordinary MR and Marine ply always seems to be a soft far eastern mahogony and they have a very course grain structure which doesn’t finish very well, particularly on the edges.
Prepare, paint, sand, paint, sand, paint, etc – it’s all about the preparation.
