  • Overlapping sections of print (from a single image)

    Hi all,
Sorry in advance if this is a bit hard to describe/understand!

I have been provided with a very large image that I need to "cut" into sections, print and use to wrap a number of storage wall doors.
This would be reasonably straightforward but the customer wants the prints to wrap around the vertical edges of the doors.

I therefore need to print each part of the image to accurately fit the doors and add around 20mm of overlap each side to allow for the edges to be wrapped.

I can do this manualy but it will take a long time as there are around 30 doors. Also I guess the overall accuracy will suffer!

Is there an easier/automated way of doing this in either Illustrator or Photoshop?
I have looked at Illustrators "print/tile" feature but am not sure it will work as this seems to be for printing directly from Illustrator (and I need to import the individual images into versaworks)

Import image directly in to versa works and tile image from there. You can specify how much overlap you want. When you’ve applied the print you can trim the overlap to achieve a butt joint.
Recommend you use polymeric vinyl and laminate.

    Thanks John,

I’d assumed I needed to use Illustrator to get the accurately sized individual panels. I’m back at the shop tomorrow so will fire up Versaworks and take a look how I can get the panels sized up.

Yes, we were planning on using Arlon Polymeric with matching laminate….that was until we found out today that we have a fault running through several rolls of laminate 🙁

    Hi John,

    Thanks again for your help/advice.
We ran of a test print this morning using Versaworks to create the necessary overlaps – worked a treat (after a bit of lateral thinking!).

The problem we came accross was that for the first panel, as there was nothing to the left of it, there was nothing for Versaworks to overlap onto.
This basically meant that we didn’t get an overlap on the left hand side of the first panel, so didn’t have any print to wrap around the left hand side.

We got round this by adding a dummy panel onto the lefthand end of the artwork. This fooled Versaworks into producing the required overlap on both sides of the new 2nd (1st) panel.

End result was the test print fitted perfectly to our borrowed test doors, which are now residing in a friends kitchen!

I’ve very confident now in our ability to produce the panels for the upcoming storage wall project.

    Thanks again,
    Steve
