I received an e-shot from a Chinese company promoting their laminator which had an integrated sort of X-Y cutter on board. Very clever I thought… but then more I thought about it, the more I could see it could easily go wrong, you know how tricky a laminator can be to set 100% true. Yes very doable, but still. Then there is the fact that the majority of stuff spat out of China is junk… not all but plenty of it, so I dismissed it as a simple and clever idea!

Then I saw that HP has launched the following printer with a very similar setup…

    "HP DesignJet Z6 And Z9⁺ 44-in PostScript Printer With V-Trimmer | V-Trimmer Technology"

Alignment for a start is much easier and I do not see HP launching it without it actually being properly tested.
Have to say this put a smile on my face as this is obviously the way things are moving and only time before HP has this on multiple types of their machines, then closely followed by competitors doing same or similar.

If the likes of latex machines had this, how easy would it be knocking out roll-up and pop-up stands all day long using one of these? and truck wraps that have around x25no. panel drops at 9ft deep… time-saving on that alone is worth it, never mind the number of fingertips lost in the process. :awkward:

the downside, for now, is the prints cant be then laminated… but going by the Chinese laminator I saw, this is just around the corner too!

Anyway, I do like seeing new and innovate things coming into the market, especially equipment we will use every day!

would be awesome for those correx site boards too, I’ve just done around 70 600×400 with an unlaminated 3yr mono on them… literally just finished them, this would’ve saved a good couple of hours trimming up!

HP used to have a cutting system very similar to this on one of there very early solvent machines HP8000s it was more of a manual sheet cut but this looks similar in terms of colours.

These cutters are are fairly normal on the grand format machines, I know the Durst 512 has a number of vertical cutters but not horizontal.

What happens if the media begins to move ever so slightly across a long run? Do these have any kind of sensors to adjust.

    Looks very interesting mind.

Must be similar to the Fotoba cutters, where it prints registration marks to align the cutter.

I wonder though if it’ll cut different size jobs automatically, say you print 10 A1’s, and 20 A2’s at the side of them?

That would be some cleverness – Durst have a 20 year X,Y cutter that does exactly that although they don’t make them anymore.

Print with Reg marks put in cutter and the blades know where to cut, they automatically move to the positions
