My first attempt at making an out-gassing cabinet
Posted by John Mackenzie on October 2, 2015 at 10:40 am…here is my first attempt at making an out-gassing cabinet!
Still a couple of little bits to finish off (a piece across the front at the top to hide the fan) but overall I am just glad to have a dedicated place to put the vinyl after printing!!!

10/10 for effort on this John. :thumbup2:
It is great to see someone taking an issue like outgassing seriously mate.Your unit looks nice and robust.
Does the fan at the top suck the air up or blow downwards?
Is the base plate mesh?I have my own thoughts on these type of units, but will elaborate when i have a bit more time to type up.
Thanks very much for taking the time to post up your work.

The fan blows downwards but tbh it is a bit feeble so I’m going to have to upgrade it, the base is perforated aluminium.
Once I have our unit a bit more organised I will make a more permanent cabinet with multiple ‘bays’….

John, nice bit of engineering. The fan doesn’t need to be strong, solvent is heavy & naturally fulls, so long as you have bottom vents a trickle fan to help things along should be fine. A strong fan as more chance of sucking dirt particles in to the box unless you want to filter the air intake, but the filter then reduces the fan anyway

By the way Kevin how many days must the solvent vinyl relax before mounting???

If its stupid but it works, then it isn’t stupid . . . .
I would have the one at the top on show for the customers, and the ones on the bottom round the back 😉

Yeah John definitely wins on style & finish. Might rip off his design some day we’re quiet 😉

Here’s our version, sorry it’s only one bad image but didn’t feel like taking the rolls off to photo inside :shake: 😆
It’s a £35 Ikea box and we made an ACM tray to fit inside which has 2 silent running bathroom extractors sucking and blowing out the holes below. The tray inside only goes half way down. We’ve never had problems with outgassing before making this so don’t even know if it makes any difference but thought we would do it anyway :awkward:
