Minimum Order / Set Up Charges
I’m seeking some advice/reassurance on this.
A couple of changes lately that have seen me look at costs & how I price jobs again, renewing the lease on the workshop with a not insignificant rent increase, and more suppliers implementing minimum orders, or surcharges on orders.
As a business I understand, it’s the same at our end, where some jobs simply don’t return the profit when you weigh up the time and effort involved. I’ve been a bit lax with minimum orders yet the local franchise seem to quote £150.00 for any small jobs.
Looks like I need to bite the bullet and start passing on some costs, incorporating ‘set up’ costs into prices, and having minimum orders.
I’ve spoken with a few other sign makers, who are experiencing the same, and we’ve all got a different take on it, so interested to hear others.
NB: I tend to look at what I could get for the price of a job… eg: two personalised magnetic signs for £20… when a mass-produced Tesco meal deal is £3.40 (with a Clubcard) That £20.00 wouldn’t get a takeaway for Mrs and me on a Friday. NB2 (I don’t charge £20!)

i agree that times have changed and often when you go and get any work done e.g. mechanic, builder there are no favors done anymore, everything is charged for down to the penny.
This have forced me to stop being so kind and charging for surveys, admin on large jobs etc etc.
With regards to your min orders obviously we offer a wide range of products so its hard to go through everything but printed stickers is minimum half sqm and generally now i have a minimum charge of 25 quid no matter how small the job.

I now have a minimum job price of £30 for anything cut vinyl, and £65 for anything with print. plus minimum £15 design / set-up if anything other than mega basic.
