  • Magnetic sheet, advice needed please?

Posted by Danny Harris on January 30, 2021 at 4:07 pm

    Hi everyone.

Needs some advice on magnetic sheets as I have never used them before. Is it possible to print and cut them using my Roland SP540i ?

I need to make 50 logo fridge magnets for a customer and the shape is not straightforward to use a Stanley knife or scissors to cut around. Also, where can I buy thinner magnetic rolls as I do not need the strength and the thickness of the vehicle grade stuff?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi Danny

You should try contacting Anchor Magnets or Bisbell Magnets. I have used them over the years.
You would need a digital surface grade to print directly to the magnet. I have never used it though, I normally just mount the vinyl to the face of the magnet.

I doubt you will need a magnetic the same strength as you would use on a vehicle if putting them on a fridge.

surely a different type of blade and function on the machine would be required to cut something like this? If not, I would be interested in knowing too!

We use Magnetic Solutions http://www.magnetic-solutions-ltd.co.uk as well as Anchor Magnets.

I’ve never had much success printing onto the thicker versions (0.6/0.8mm), so apply vinyl to them but the thinner grade (0.3mm), which from memory they call ferrous paper prints fine.

I’ve cut this in our Graphtec but not all the way through, just on a pressure heavy enough to score the surface giving you a good guide to get a blade into.

I am sure Grafityp and All Print Supplies do a printable grade magnetic material.

Danny I used to put the thinner magnetic rolls from Bisbell through the Roland in my previous job and it printed and cut fine. I used to just keep a separate blade for magnet cutting and put the force on full. It would rarely go all the way through, but it would cut deep enough that you could then push the cut shapes out the roll. It’s probably not the best treatment for your printer, but it worked.
