  • Looking for an opinion on my own logo

Posted by Steve Hooper on February 20, 2013 at 2:28 pm

I don’t know if this is appropriate or not. Principally I am an engineer and I started my business back in 2003 so am approaching my 10th anniversary and I wondered if my logo was now outdated.

I’m not looking for anyone to do freebie design work for me just an opinion from others that are more creative than I and have a different perspective (I am too close).

My principle business supplies machines and services to the electronics manufacturing industry in the UK so am a B2B supplier.

Initially the business was about partnerships and the name is a play on the word ‘symbiosis’. The logo was ‘designed’ by me to be used on literature and in websites/Powerpoints. I kept the colours to just two spots as this impacted on costs (10 years ago). The concept of the logo is an orbiting ‘something’… Remove one element and the dynamic of symbiosis changes as in an atom.

These days I still stress the ‘partnership’ way of working. I use a tag-line of "Making Partnership Work!" but I am principally a sales and support distributor. My laser engraving/fabrication business is simply a T/A division of the main LTD and uses a different name and identity.

I have refrained from posting my domain or logo as I am not sure if this would be in breach of rules, if it is allowed I can add this (of course) if it is not allowed, well… no damage done. :). Perhaps a moderator or senior member would advise?

I also understand that there is a ‘help’ section on the forum but I don’t have access to this as a free-loader.

    Steve,

The way it works is that you would put up your existing logo and a new attempt at where you would like to go in the Graphic Design Help and Discussion forum, giving as much information as you can regarding colours, how it would be reproduced etc etc

Have a look in there…there are plenty of examples of people willing to help and advise once you start the ball rolling yourself

Sure post it up…I love to pick stuff apart.
Please Lord don’t let it contain Brush Script, Comic Sans, or Bleeding Cowboys!
    🙂

    Glenn,

I don’t have an idea for an alternative at the moment I am initially wondering whether I should change or not. 🙂

Jill, tear it shreds, My wife says I am fat but I’m actually just very thick-skinned. 🙂 🙂

    The domain is http://www.cimbian.co.uk/

I doubt anyone here is a potential customer for me so I don’t think it is spamming… Unless someone needs a nice cable tester. 😉

    It’s really ho-hum.
It tells me nothing of what you do, at a quick glance.
Very dated looking as well, with the oval.
Big plus though for not using the aforementioned fonts.

Much as I was thinking but wasn’t sure if it was just me…

I’ll get my thinking head on. 🙂

I dunno, looking at it, I agree with Jill, it doesn’t really say much about what you do. I’ll have a think about it, just read the brief again, if you have any more detail, I’d be happy to help. Takes my mind of the cheap coffee (grinder is broke! 😀

Another go, the blue and yellow circles coming together to make the green dot (I feel all graphicy designer! 🙂 )

I do think you need the descriptive strapline though.

Tidied it up and gave everything a bit more room to breathe. Attaching an AI as well, feel free to use it as you wish. If you need any adjustments, just shout.

    Great work Harry…..

I wish I could get ideas like that I can create whatever someone wants in the software but the idea in the first place is the hard bit and teh real Talent !

Thanks for the comps people. I like Jill’s and Glenn’s less corporate versions as well. It’s something that needs to be considered when choosing a logo too I think,…just where you want to position your business. And only Steve can decide that in a brief.

Hard to know how to advise Nick, I know I have trained myself to do a lot of the ‘idea’ stuff, it’s boils down more to perspiration than inspiration. For instance when Steve gave his original brief I noted key words down and then did a bit of research on them, things like ‘atom’, ‘partnership’ ‘electronics’ and then I enter those words in an image search and scroll through loads of images, just getting a feel for how those concepts are visually represented.
If stumped, I would then narrow it down to looking at other similar companies logo’s by just entering ‘logo’ after the terms or I would go to ‘inspiration’ sites (I think you can find some on the toolbar.
Doing both of the above has kinda of replaced doing mood boards for quick ideas. I would still do them for a commisioned logo. Mood boards would just be assembling all of the above together and then sitting down with a pencil and paper first and doing loads of sketches to allow concepts to evolve and then working with the client to develop ones they like.

You definately get better at it and you do build up a store of ideas that speeds things up. I remember how laboured my processes where when I started…the company would be ready to launch on the stock market before I decided on a logo! 😀

I have always said this place is akin to having two or three extra staff in the workshop, always good to give something back.
