Is this a scam?
Posted by CAT on 22 June 2005 at 22:17Some guy phoned me today from a company called partners in business,
he says he can guarantee me loads of work from about 20 company’s a month in my area. Now the interesting bit, it will cost £250 for the first six months, or £396 for one year, he is coming to see me on Friday at 2.00pm,this should be interesting and I will let you all know what happens.
If anyone has had a similar phone call please let me know. Thanks Tony.Peter Normington replied 20 years, 8 months ago 13 Members · 20 Replies -

Sounds like a “networking” scam to me, Let us know what happens, but ask this question, “If you can guarantee the work, can I pay next year”

ring him up and tell him to bog off.
how can he gauentee you jobs…..
spend the money on YP.
or tell him you`ll pay at the end of each month/year….

I’m sure we had a similar thing last year … but it was that they could guarantee so many leads per month … Steve took the call so Im not sure what exactly was said …. but I know that they say they have details for new tenders coming up and new companies coming ino the area etc and so can give you the details ….. we personally thought it was a bad idea/scam …. Could be wrong though? I agree with Becky spend the money else where.

I had a call similar to Carrie’s. It was from a reputable sales leads supplier (I used them years ago) but you don’t know what sort of leads you’ll get and it was rather expensive for a small business like myself. I would imagine there are also dodgy people offering the same service.

Yes there are you never see anything on paper then all of a sudden you owe them money?

You should invite the local police over at the same time for a free cup of tea. That should help to see if this is legit or not.

Tell him its a load of beau locks, he is talking r soles, and there is Norfolk an Chance, of you buying it.
(hope I got round the swear bot,)

we have this style of thing here. Basically thay send you heaps of tenders from all sorts of people, then it is up to you to get the work.
signed up with one crowd last year, and they were broke in 6 months, and although I got probably 20 leads a month, (ie tender notices) I never got a job.
😥 Learnt that lesson the expensive way.

I tell these sort of people that I would be happy to participate, but we only do payment by results and if we get a job from one of their leads we will be happy to pay them 10% commission. I then give them the hard sell as to how they should jump at this because if their service is as good as they say it is then their potential earnings will be much greater than a measly £396 per year.
Every single time they backpedal rapidly and say that they don’t work like that. I then tell them that if they don’t have that sort of confidence in their service then neither do I and show them the door.

if i remember correctly.
they give you leads of any business that has applied for planning permision to either set up shop or have exterior signage fitted.

Thanks guys I will ask him some of the stuff you have all come up with and I will keep you updated as to what happens on Friday.

Cant you just check out planning permissions for shops etc at your local council? I belong to “Sell to Wales” and they email you any leads for free! I get maybe 4 or 5 a week.

I got one of these recently, and they just gaurantee a minimum of leads not work. Because I live in a remote area and specified the post codes I was willing to get leads from the price dropped to £175/year for 15 leads/month. This seemed to be their lowest price (started at £420/year for 50 leads) as they were willing to add other post codes to boost the number to 20 for no extra charge.
It not only included planning permission notices (which I check weekly in the local press anyway) but new telephone numbers, changes of business owners and some others.
I am considering it for when I move to bigger premises to boost the sales without me having to do more legwork.

Well done Jem, just looked at the councils web site and it tells me all the planning permissions asked for in my area. Thanks. Tony.

I always have a browse through the planning applications in the local paper … most always seem to be house conversions, extensions etc and the odd illuminated sign application …. 😕 Will have to keep my eyes peeled.

Ok you lot, its like the data protection act, used to get calls and mail asking if I had registered. They said that its a legal requirement if you keep data. true, but to register direct costs say £15 they want £200.
All the info offer is freely available. They just charge for giving it you………………….
