  • Is Foamex my best choice??

Posted by paddy on April 30, 2003 at 6:10 pm

I have got four signs to make for a garage, I quoted for Proframe signs and he nearly fell off his chair.
So I have had a chat and he said he would be happy with foam board screwed directly to the front of his metal garage doors.

The question I am asking is would Foamex be the best or is there an alternative?? signs are 4off 8’x2′ in glossy white with Blue lettering.

Need to quote by 2morow so please reply soon.

PS – where is the cheapest supplier for foamex and what sort of prices should I pay for 8’x4′ sheets of say 5mm and 10mm board.

It looks like no one has a definitive answer for you Paddy, and I’m going to be no better.
I’d like to say Dibond but if the customer has his wallet closed you’re left with little choice.

The usual applies, make good sized pilot wholes in the Foamex to allow it to expand and contract.
A good fastening that I sometimes use are drive rivets. You need to place a small piece of plastic, that’s about as thick as a credit card, with a slot in it behind the Foamex and around the rivet. After tapping in the rivet’s pin pull out the plastic to leave the Foamex loosely fitted and floating. You can use the rivets through metal, into brick or most other surfaces. Just test the size of your drill whole with a rivet first. I believe my rivets came from Amari but quite a long while ago.

Just pop ‘drive rivets’ into Google.co.uk all the info you could possibly want.

I would shy away from screwing foamex to matal doors which will absorb heat during the day expanding the foamex with the inevitable buckling between the fixings (unless he likes wavy signs). Do yourself a favour and get a sheet of 3mm alucolor from Europoint and get it cut to size i think to members its about £70-75 per sheet and you will get both signs out of it. In the long run you dont want the customer phoning you as soon as the foamex gets warm to “come down and sort this mess out” better to spend a little more for peace of mind!!!

those rivits are available from heyco, look em up on the net, if you want to use a foam, COX plastics do a black cored foam which is stiffer and better for using for a cheapie, good for site boards as well
