It sounds like it could be the earlier versions of Carbon fibre.
I think the earliest Carbon fibres were by 3M which from memory, was actually 3M Dinoc film and the adhesive was far too aggressive to be used on vehicles, but suppliers were naive to this in the early days and only too happy to sell it. By the time the problems started being reported, nobody took much notice because it was in demand.
3M di-noc had Matt, but the weave was small.
The carbon and 3D film trend seemed to be followed by other manufacturers such as Oracal, Avery, Hexis etc. Others did it but were mainly just white-label and rebranded versions of others.
I am positive it was Matt that Oracal also did initially because I had wrapped with both 3M and the Oracal version. The reason I know this for sure is because I had a return customer who wanted their bonnet and boot wrapped the same as I had done their roof, but the morning of the car’s arrival, I opened the box and it was gloss! I thought it looked crap, shiny and cheap, almost plastic. I complained and it was changed. This was “Oracal” and I am guessing, but I would say their earlier carbons had a larger weave. I have no clue if this is still available though.
I have attached some photos I have just taken of old swatch books I have in a drawer in my office at home.
(yes, I am that sign nerd who keeps things like this. 😂 ) ironically, I don’t see the OLD oracal swatches, but I will check when I get to my workshop tomorrow.
You can see these samples all show gloss with a small weave, other than the 2007 3M Di-Noc which is matt, but still a small weave.
