  • How do I infill Engraved Brass

Posted by Matthew Hanley on June 23, 2017 at 2:26 pm

    Hi guys,
Any help would be greatly appreciated. What type of paint should I use when engraving Outdoor brass nameplates?
Also, what is the cleaning process? As in how long should I leave the paint to dry, what should I use to clean the excess paint etc. I’m self taught and I’ve been using a very light sandpaper which ruins the mirror effect of the new brass.

    Hi Matt,

I would recommend using an acrylic paint. Use a brush to layer the paint over the engraved area, and then use a piece of stiff paper or cardboard to smooth over the top leaving a thin layer of paint.

Make sure you’ve got enough paint in the engraved area to cover the cutter marks. It’s fairly fast drying and you’ll be able to see when it’s ready to wipe off. Then use a lint free cloth with some alcohol on to gently wipe over the face, removing the paint from the face and leaving the paint in the engraved area. Certainly don’t use sandpaper or rub hard at it.

    Hope this helps.

    Have a good weekend!

    Chris

Using syringe equipped with needle and filled with acrylic paint would be my option to save too much time cleaning 🙂

I dont do much engraving these days and anytime we do now, its using a laminate.
In the past doing brass, i would use both methods mentioned above, to back fill and then clean with a soft cloth etc because its easy to mark the face of the brass…

Engrave down to about 0.3mm deep

Fill with cellulose paint and use a plastic squeegee to scrape off the excess

When dry, wrap a pet disc (or anything flat) in a lint free cloth and clean surface with methylated spirits

Polish with Peek using the same technique as above.
