  • Help..Printer problem not recognising sheet size

Posted by David McPhillips on February 4, 2013 at 2:24 pm

ok after spending all morning trying to get my uniform cadet plus to recognise the media sheet size and the continued "pinch roller error" message being displayed I have finally admitted defeat and I am hoping more experts in the printer field can shed some light on what is causing this continued error message to be displayed.

Steps I have taken to try a rectify the problem are:

    * Cleaned pinch rollers & gritted feed rollers
    * Cleaned encoder strip and all other cables running to head carriage
    * Cleaned sensors
    * Turned printer off and restarted (A number of times)
    * Tried various size sheets (problem still persists)
    * Moved pinch rollers to various usable positions

After doing all of the above the only difference i am getting in error messages is it changing from "error pinch roller right pos" to "error pinch roller left pos" every now and then.

Any help or advice on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated as it now has me puzzled, my only thought now is the either the encoder strip or carriage cable may need replaced.

Thank you in advance for any help

    Hi David,

It’s your encoder strip, that is used. I had exactly the same problem.

Sometimes it would work again, after flushing the system [default settings]

But once my technician came and changed the encoder strip, it was perfect.

He said it occurs on machines that have some age already, it’s almost considered a consumable item, the encoder strip, like changing ink heads, or cushions.

I was doing exactly the same thing, changing position of pinch roller, in out, cleaning, pressing down on material clamp.

The whole affair cost me 750€. Well worth it, considering I no longer contemplate a "pinch roll error".

    Good luck

    Hi Patrick

Thanks for the reply I had a feeling this was going to be the problem, i have been on Tech 8 and digi print supplies looking for encoder strips although the only items I can find is trailing cables and sheet linear scale cable, but neither site has any cables named encoder strip, would you know whether encoder strip is the correct name for this part and any suppliers these can be purchased from??

Can you also confirm if the encoder strip is the clear plastic strip found on the carriage running bar?

    Thanks again for your help

If it is the encoder strip try and take it out and put it upside down. One of our versacamms has been running like this for about 3 years now.

Thanks Gary Ill give that ago and see if that helps panic stations as I have orders to dispatch tomorrow so if I can get this working its going to be a long night.

Gary before I start adjusting things can you tell me is the encoder strip the clear strip running along the top of the carriage rail spring loaded at each side?

    Thanks again

Yes thats it. From memory they and about £180 + VAT so this fix will save you a few quid too.

You will find that when it is in the right way around there is locating hole but just clamp it as though there is a hole when you turn it over.

I think they are called a linear encoder strip but someone will be able to confirm, or ring Roland up.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

Sorry Gary haven’t been on the boards since the printer went down but just to update on progress it turned out to be the cut carriage trailing cable that was the problem I only received this part today and once replaced the printer was back to reconsigning the sheet size, so thanks to Ashley at Tech 8 and his knowledge the trailing cable only cost a quarter the price of the encoder strip.

HOWEVER while the printer was down I got a "service call 0101" in which i done a limit initialization reset but i think i went into the wrong service menu as it only gave the option of Roland Versacam so now when I power up the printer it displays "Roland SP-540V E-Sol Max" rather than just SP-540 as it had done previously.

So now when I try and send artwork through from Wasatch RIP it keeps coming up "failed to open TCP/IP connection TCP/IP 192.168.0.101:9100 try again"

Has anyone any ideas how to enter the service menu for a uniform cadet SP-540 to reset the limit initialization back to the uniform settings and do I need to reset the IP address so the RIP software will recognise the printer?

All help appreciated and thanks again to all those for they’re previous input.

    Cheers

The correct sequence will depend on what version of firmware is installed.

Thanks for the link Steve I will give those a try, i think i am correct in saying the printer displayed version 6.2 firmware before the problem occurred.

    Cheers
