i am against the hairdryers.. even though im sure they work, they dont get the right amount of heat. 🙄

Hair dryers and heat guns are very similar, both giving a power output of about 1500 watts. The difference is that a hair dryer passes a much bigger volume of air resulting in a gentler heat.

I used hair dryers satisfactorily for years but when I started employing people, who do not look after kit as well as the person who is paying for it, I realised that they are not robust enough and went on to heat guns.

Of course, nowadays with wrapping vinyl, which needs an intensive heating up after application, you really do need the higher temperature of a heat gun.

Even now we cannot get a years use out of a heat gun, which irritates me, but it does have one useful side effect. Our Health and Safety consultant has classified them as disposable items and they are not therefore subject to portable appliance testing!

Just remembered, the wife bought a green bosh heat gun for stripping some paint last year, will have to go and raid her garden shed when she aint looking. 😆

Still being new to the business I use both a heat gun and a hairdryer.
To avoid applying to much heat to the vinyl where it crosses a panel and has nothing behind it I use the hairdryer. Once the graphics are fitted properly I then go over it with the heat gun to ensure the vinyl is stuck down properly. I am not convinced the hairdryer on its own heats the vinyl enough to ensure it stays firmly in the reccesses.

I went and got a variable speed, electronically variable heat controlled one as I do a lot of tinting. It cost me about $200.00 but I’ve had it now for three years and it’s still going strong, I’m not gentle on gear as well so it’s lasted really well…Saying that now the bloody thing’ll pack up.

The Vairable speed ones are the Best, even thoose realy cheep, Power devil ones. You only end up droping them….and have I broken a lot of of my wifes Hair driers in the past 😳

Another little tip…I use like Leeroy a variable heatgun mainly for tinting windows. If you look at the end of a cheap heatgun or such the hotair comes straight out of the front, the variable ones and generally more expensive ones have a deflector in the nozzle so the heat is dispersed more evenly and not in one spot.

They last much longer too!

…use a ‘proper’ heat gun everytime.

the temperature needed to soften vinyl into recesses is, apparently, about 200-250 degrees…and to ‘cook’ it afterwards, about 600-650 degrees!!! You can’t get this kind of nozzle temp from a hair dryer.
