GERBER EDGE…WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING SECOND HAND.
Posted by Kevin.Beck on February 1, 2003 at 5:39 pmI`ve been speaking to Adrian, regarding his edge.
They sound the business.
MUCH BETTER THAN THE P600 if your lisening Mr. Roland, (Mr. Roland if he wants to, is welcome to visit me at work and show me what I`m doing wrong, if anything
So I`m thinking of getting one, can`t afford a brand new one, so it`s got to be a second hand. The problem with second hand is they could come with certain problems. (worn parts due to age. etc)
So my question to all you edge heads, what do I look for? Models/age etc.
Adrian has already told me to keep clear of the very early models. Is there anything eles to look out for??becky

I have an Edge 1 I bought it completely refurbished, new head and all the rubber bands etc inside had been replaced by the local Gerber dealer, it came as well with a short warranty, and some foils (10) as a start.
The later Edge 1’s have a fan on the top of the print head, I think their called Classics or Trunnions, I bought mine direct from Spandex here in Sweden, it was a trade in from a shop that bought an Edge 2.
It seems to work fine, and makes good money, the edge can be driven by Signlab now, but if you talk nicely to spandex they might give you a deal with somesort of software package, to run alongside whatever you use today.
I have a Summa T750 main plotter, and use my old Sprint for contour cutting, that means you can leave that rattling away in the corner, at its own pace and continue to cut daily jobs on the summa, today you could pick up an old gerber plotter cheaply too, and they go on forever albeit abit slowly.
Go to http://www.edgetalk.com and ask Glenn Taylor about the test to check wear on a printhead, that’s the biggest expense, but if you buy from a Gerber dealer you should get more support even if it costs abit more.

What sort of £price do you think I would expect to pick up an edge for?
I know the edge just prints, and I need a cutter to contour cut the decals after printing. Is there only 1 model that will do the job or are the a few to choose from.
Do you think it would be a good idea to buy the whole kit(printer/cutter/software) in one go, or buuy what I can when it comes on the market? ie. cuter first, then printer.

Hi Kev
Henry has covered the models for you edge 1 & 2, The 1 would be about 7/8 years from release now and is still being sold at present last time I enquired spandex were doing a bit of an offer thing at about 9 k all in the mk 2 slightly different dpi and reported to be quite faster and quite a bit dearer at about 17 k the best thing is to look on the spandex site for specifications I dont now what the cost of foil is but they qoute (from memory) about £1.70 a meter this then would take you up to a round 6.80 for full colour & black.
This as you probably know is 380mm wide. I have seen a luton van done all over the side
in strips (horizontal) and it was quite impessive I did take a piccy Ill see if i can find it later and post it what impessed me most was the colour match was quite good fom strip to strip.Of course the only problem with a s/h one is finding one in the first place

Hi there,
We were lucky in that we had been 100% Gerber for many years, so I had run Graphix Advantage software from early versions up to its transition to Omega today, we had 2 older Gerber plotters a 15″ and 30″, which I used just for pouncing after buying my Summa T series plotter. I also kept them as I thought I would one day buy an Edge.
The Edge 2 print 600dpi x 300dpi the Edge 1 is 300x 300, this is of interest when doing 4 colour prints but not so on spot prints. The Edge 1 is slower to print I forget the feet per minute but I am sure you can get all that info from Spandex.
WE are quite happy with the Edge 1 and don’t really see any benefits here today in upgrading to an Edge 2, you have to think about your market, and what you want to do with it.
Over here alot of people bought Edges a few years ago and found it paid for itself inside a year, doing short run decals etc.
As for foils and foil prices, we use Gerber foils for some jobs, we use Duracoat which here cost about the same for 92m as Gerber charge for 45m, and we also use Sign Foils from http://www.codingproducts.com I don’t know if you can buy them in the UK.
There are plenty of people in the world who will always want the latest of everything, whether they really have a need for it or not. So I’m sure there are shops out there that are trading perfectly good EDge 1’s for Edge 2’s in the belief they are keeping abreast with technology. If you don’t need the extra dpi, and speed then an Edge 1 would be a good place to start in digital printing.
