  • Fitting a Serial port to my computer

    Hi guys.

Been having the usual connectivity problems with my Redsail plotter to my pc via a cheapy USB to Serial adapter lead.

Now it would be much easier to just have the serial lead from plotter to pc, but I dont have that port on my pc.

So my question is, can I just buy a serial port card for the back of my pc and use that and cut the middle man, or is it just as effective to buy the recommended ‘keyspan’ adpater I read about on here.

Anything that minimises any more anger I face from this thing appreciated.

Apologies if it sounds a stupid question. I just don’t want to keep going down the wrong roads.

The serial to usb adapters don’t usually work unless it’s for something like a older games pad ie old serial M/S sidewinder games pad,
probably better to just get a plug in card for your PC

In order to do that your motherboard would have to support it, your best bet would be to have a look at the maual for the motherboard and see if a serial card is supported. Some motherboards do have a connection on the board for both serial and parallel ports.

i’d use a pci serial card, i installed one on my old PC to for the same reason relatively straight forward if your board supports it.
The below link is for the maplin range.

Would be no problem, I have one in this Dell machine. Cost about £6.
