Faulty black composite, views please?
Posted by Mark Johnston on March 12, 2023 at 4:12 pmhi gang
we have a customer complaining about a lot of marks appearing on a black composite sign we did for him some time ago. we think it is about 2+ years ago that we did this and are puzzled as to why this has happened. it looks like little chips on the surface but it’s all over the place and has a milky residue on it which can be wiped off.
sorry my picture isn’t the best, cold morning up ladders with my phone. 🙄Has anyone had the same problem?

Hi Mark,
2+ years…you’ve done well !!!
ACM is a crap overhyped product with no manufacturers backup, when asked they cant give any reasons why these problems occur….all your get back from them are the sheets you’ve used …WOW
The dark colours are worse, I’ve had so many issues with them pitting, fading, bubbling and delaminating.
If you need to use ACM cover and wrap it in vinyl and never butt the joins together, folded tray against folded tray (so protecting a so called exterior grade product!!) or get back to the tried & tested powder coated Aluminium…it’ll probably work out cheaper.
PS. I have wiped down black ACM panels with WD40…it helps but not something you want your customer to see you doing…heck I’m sure you sold the product to them with ACM’s 5 yr warranty !!!

thanks guys, so we are not alone. 🤨
what make of black composite did you have the problms with Paul?

Hi Mark
All of them but the one made in the UK was dreadful !!
Black & dark grey are the worst.

I have used Skybond, Dibond and Rynabond, and I have not had any adverse effects to date.
A good few years back, I used some Black from Righton and it was a mess, went milky, pitted and generally bad nick. However, when I complained, I had new sheets delivered the next morning as a replacement, no questions asked. So there was clearly a known issue and a good response to the problem. However, It doesn’t fix my labour costs and material costs to remake and install the signs!
I have heard similar issues with other brands from people on this website, but none I can name.

That is terrible, surely this cannot be the norm? ðŸ˜
it is great that they give you replacement sheets but I don’t want to do the job again for free and it also looks bad on us, as a company. 😤
