Here was something just a little different.

We do engraving and etching on a daily basis, but usually just on brass
and stainless steel plates. We had a call from someone asking could we
etch a spade !!!! It’s being used as an award.

We had to make sure it was done right first time, and came out very well.

    Looks really good! 😀

Out of interest, how do you keep the edges so clean? My only experience of etching is using small blue non-sticky masks for part identification, but tended to get bleed around the edges. It wasn’t that important for that use but would have looked awful on something like that.

we ‘just’ cut a negative template from vinyl and apply it to whatever we
want to etch. Then make sure the rest of the item is masked up, usually
again just using vinyl so that the acid doesn’t touch any other surface.

‘bung’ it in the tank for however long and hey presto one etched plate.

Ahhhh, so its immersion etch rather than electro-etch then?

    Different acids for different alloys?

The kit I have used was a manual pad, only about 2" X 1" in size used like a wand.

The system we have is we have a tank and the plates are placed around
the outer edge. The acid is ‘swirled’ around the tank to create a mist.

This mist is what etches the plates etc.

    I think that’s right anyway. :lol1:
