Drill rig cab colour change wrap advice
Hi All,
I have a very good customer who has asked if I could price up doing a colour change wrap to his drill rig cab. White to black.
Now I’ve done a small amount of wrapping before like a few back doors on sprinter vans, roof wrapped a Kia Sportage & a few other bits but never a full colour change wrap!
I think this could be a potentially tricky one given the large wings on it!! (see pics below).
I’ve explained this to him but he’s happy for me to use his rig as bit of a learning exercise which might be handy in a way but obviously it will still need to be done to a standard.
I’d be interested to know if anyone has tackled anything similar to this & if so how you would approach it. As mentioned I see the section between the flattish sides of the bonnet & the bulging wings being the trickiest areas. Would it be best to just accept there may have to be a join there or could it be wrapped in one?
Any advice or tips on the whole thing would be very much appreciated & even any guesses at how long I should estimate it to take as a novice!

That looks a big job Myles. those wheel arch flares will not be easy!
do you have some place big enough inside to install the wrap? -
I’d be inclined to put a join in it, wrap the top section of the arches, then overlap the side of the bonnet section onto it to prevent water ingress. Depending how sharp the corner is, it might be barely noticeable.

Its a big job but as others have mentioned the arches would be done as a piece on their own. Then overlap the side of the hood onto them.

It is a big job, big vehicle. But it doesn’t look overly complex, other than the arches it’s relatively flat. Easier still if you can strip the mirrors, handles, grilles, lights, rubber around the door window.
It’s not like having to wrap deep recesses, it should go down relatively easily with air release. It’s the just size that’s intimidating.

Matt or Satin black for the top of the hood (as it’s American) Gloss from the body line down this would help hide the joint and make the panels smaller to work with. The Arlon colour change is great to work with and spot on for price also.

i am very keen to get into wrapping more and more. but these type of jobs just dont come up on our radar! 🤔 -

It’s most definitely those arches that worried me most! As David says the rest is relatively flat & boxy & I think given time & patience should be perfectly doable especially if I can remove as much as possible beforehand.
Yes I will have be able to use the guy’s shed for fitting. It’s not the cleanest & warmest of sheds but I can create a clean work area & get a blow heater to improve the temperature.
I definitely like the idea of splitting it for the arches & having a join along the natural body lines & the mix of matt & gloss is also a great idea. Just wondering would you continue that back to the main cab & doors as that body line does continue back? i.e. door bottoms gloss & anything above matt or would that look odd do you think?
Would anyone hazard a very vague guess at an approx. cost for doing something like this??

Just wing it!
We wrapped this motorbike in Hexis Chrome, and were left to our own devices, as it needed joining due to the lack of stretch, we just did what felt ‘right’ and worked.
As to price, I’d say 2days minimum, 3-4 realistically if you’re not 100% confident, and idea how much material you’d need?

Nice job David. I imagine the chrome is not too easy to work with?
I don’t have any idea yet as to quantity of vinyl as I’ve really just been sussing out if it was likely to be possible. So now it looks like it may be I’ll take some measurements & also maybe have a look at what bits might be removable whilst I’m at it.

At a guess 15-20mts most of the parts on those trucks bolt off, so allow a day for stripping and re-fit or if they have their own guy’s they might do it. But doing the whole job I would think €2.5k. I know a guy who sprays tractor units and minimum for respray is €3.5k for a Topline Scania.

That’s spot on thanks a million. I may actually be able to get them to remove the bits themselves. I hadn’t thought of that & it would certainly make life easier & less stress about possibly breaking something!!

avery chrome is very expensive. is hexis stuff the same?
